Two goals from Luis Suarez gave Uruguay their first win of this World Cup group stage following a hard fought 2-1 win over England, a defeat which puts England on the brink of elimination.

Suarez opened the scoring with a glancing header in the 38th minute, before Wayne Rooney slotted home an equaliser after 75 minutes.

He then grabbed the winner after 84 minutes, after skipping past Cahill and smashing home past a beaten Hart.

The Liverpool striker was passed fit to start the game, following recent surgery on his knee, as Uruguay made five other changes, with Lugano being replaced by Gimenez in the heart of the defence.

England were unchanged from their defeat in Manaus against Italy.

The game started in an even fashion, with Uruguay keeper Muslera almost gifting England a second minute goal, as he spilled the ball at the feet of Sturridge, before swiftly gathering the lose ball.

After five minutes, Luis Suarez then caught Joe Hart out from a corner, with the England keeper diverting the driven corner onto the near post.

With ten minutes gone, Wayne Rooney flashed a free-kick wide, as England looked to take the lead in Sao Paulo.

Five minutes later, Cristian Rodriquez fizzed an effort just over Hart’s bar, from a tight angle.

Suarez was at the centre of everything Uruguay did attacking wise, and whipped in a teasing 25th minute corner into the path of Cavani, with the PSG forward fizzing his effort just wide of Hart’s post.

Wayne Rooney then headed against the far post from a well taken Gerrard free-kick, with Muslera flapping on the half hour mark.

Eight minutes later, Uruguay found the opener, through Luis Suarez.

Gonzalez beat Henderson to the ball, before spraying the ball outwide to Cavani, who skipped past Johnson and whipped in a teasing ball right onto the head of the Liverpool forward, who beat Jagielka in the air before glancing past Joe Hart.

On 40 minutes, Sturridge then forced a decent save from Fernando Muslera at his near post.

Following the half time break, Suarez almost caught Hart out again, by fizzing a ball towards the near post, with Hart bundling the ball off the line after 48 minutes.

Up the other end with 53 played, Muslera denied Rooney superbly, with the Manchester United striker skipping past Godin and firing straight into the hands of the Galatasaray keeper, following Leighton Baines’ whipped in cross.

Suarez then fed Cavani who went one on one with Hart, however Cavani failed to apply the finish and curled wide from around eight yards out or so at a rather tight angle.

Sturridge then twisted and turned from a Rooney ball, but he was also denied by the in form Muslera on the hour.

On came Ross Barkley, who replaced Raheem Sterling after 64 minutes, as England huffed and puffed.

Barkley was involved in the thick of the action straight away, spraying a delightful pass to Everton team-mate Baines, with Gimenez blocking the ball from an advancing Rooney.

With 75 minutes gone, England found an equaliser after minutes of pressure, with the goal coming from Wayne Rooney.

Glen Johnson sprinted towards the edge of the box, before feeding an unmarked Rooney with a delightful ball, with Rooney making no mistake and tapping home.

A minute later, England had a penalty shout turned down, as Sturridge appeared to had been brought down by Godin, with the protests waved away.

With 11 to play, Daniel Sturridge also saw his driven attempt well saved.

But after 84 minutes, Uruguay found their second goal, following a well taken finish from Suarez.

Following a punt down by Muslera, which was flicked on by England skipper Gerrard, directly into the path of Luis Suarez, who galloped past Cahill, before taking a touch and confidently smashing the ball into the back of the net past the desparing dive of Hart.

England attempted to find a second, however Uruguay hung onto claim all three points, and put England on the brink.
