Valdes free to join United

Former Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes looks all but set to finally sign for Manchester United on a free transfer.

Valdes has been in training with United in recent months, but no deal had yet been agreed to make the player an official Red Devil.

And now it is understood that a compensation agreement between the keeper and Monaco had been in fact preventing any deal from taking place.

Monaco had signed Valdes on a free transfer at the end of the season, but abandoned the deal when the player suffered a cruciate knee injury.

Valdes stood firm and maintained that he was entitled to his ÂŁ150,000 a week salary at Ligue 1 giants Monaco, with reports suggesting that a compromise has now been reached.

United are understood to be unwilling to pay the Spanish stopper that amount, but are ready to make the player their second choice behind David De Gea.

A deal is understood to be very close however, with Valdes’ saga expected to reach a climax in the coming weeks.
