Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm is to have knee surgery today to speed up his recovery after a long standing knee problem which the keeper has suffered in the past year or so.

The Dutch keeper wants to rectify a problem that has plauged the goalkeeper’s career at Swansea.

Manager Michael Laudrup hopes that his first choice goalkeeper will be back in the new year, once the surgery is completed and Vorm resumes training.

Laudrup had stated earlier this month that the Holland international needed to have an operation and that he expected the 30-year-old to be out for four to five weeks following the procedure.

Swansea had hoped Vorm would be able to play on into January before going under the knife, to allow the club to bring in cover with a minimum of disruption.

The keeper suffered more problems with the persistant injury in Sundays 1-1 draw at Nowrich and Laudrup stated….

“The length of time he will be sidelined depends on the scale of the operation,” a club statement said.

“Surgeons will explore the knee before carrying out work on clearing any loose ligaments and fragments of bone.”

Earlier this month Vorm said: “I have to do it now before the World Cup.

“I have had some problems with my left knee for a while. It keeps swelling up, I have had some problems with it in the last few weeks and we have tried to manage it.”

The Dutch international has been a stand out performer for the Swans since signing in the Summer of 2011 from FC Utrecht, during his first season with Swansea he helped keep 13 clean sheets in 37 league appearances.

Gerhard Tremmel will deputise in goal whilst Vorm is out injured.
