We aren’t favourites, insists Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho believes Manchester City are still the team to beat in this season’s Premier League title race, despite them currently being in fourth-place.

The Blues can go a whopping nine-points clear of City today if they beat Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, and with just nine games left, it could be a crucial points difference which could give Mourinho a Premier League title in his first season back.

However, Manuel Pellegrini’s men will have three games in hand over Mourinho after today due to their commitments in other cup competitions, and if they win all three of those games, they will leapfrog from fourth to first due to their superior goal difference.

Speaking ahead of his side’s clash with Tottenham, Mourinho was keen to reassure the media that his side are still only second favourites.

“We want to try and win and they will want to do the same,” Mourinho said.

“We want our top-four position to be safe and in this moment the biggest threat to that top-four position is Tottenham because they are fifth and they are the closest team to the top four.

“So if you can get a result against them you can say our objective of finishing in the top four is in a very good direction.

“I keep saying (going seven points clear) is not a realistic position. A realistic situation is teams with the same number of matches and in that situation you can say ‘I am in front, I am behind’ or ‘I have some points advantage or disadvantage’.

“When some teams have more matches than other teams, then it is not real. So I do not look at the table, I just look to another game. Tomorrow is another game and we will just try and win.”
