Arsenal will work on improving the squad ahead of next season is well underway as they look to complete their transfer business earlier than usual this summer.

The Gunners faltered in their attempts to strengthen their squad last summer; failing to close deals for numerous targets, including Gonzalo Higuain and Luis Suarez.

The deadline day club record swoop for Mesut Ozil salvaged what was widely viewed as a mistake-ridden transfer window.

But there is a determination not to suffer the same frustrations this summer. The club are close to finalising their priority targets list, which will include a new striker, defensive midfielder, and two defenders.

Negotiations with clubs have already started, too, with Gunners chiefs having made contact with Real Madrid over Alvaro Morata and Schalke over attacking midfielder Julian Draxler. Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Lars Bender is also a key target for Wenger.

‘We do spend time on next season, we are really focused and working very hard,’ admitted Wenger, whose side face West Ham tonight.

‘Every day we spend time on that.’
