A report from BBC claims that West Ham United are thinking about activating Maxi Gomez’s £43.3m release clause after seeing one of their opening bids get rejected by Celta Vigo.

Manuel Pellegrini decided to bench Marko Arnautovic in the 2-0 loss against AFC Bournemouth on 19th January 2018 over constant speculations surrounding the Austrian’s departure for China. The Chilena manager believed that his star forward was not in an optimal mindset to appear for the Premier League fixture.

However, Arnautovic did smash all rumours by stating he has no plans of moving to the Far East. The Hammers are pleased to keep hold of their striker for now but Pellegrini might be planning to make reservations for the future.

Gomez was signed by Celta Vigo in the summer of 2017 and since has blossomed into life in the La Liga with 9 goals in his 19 appearances this season. The 22-year-old’s contract with the Spanish outfit is set to run for another 3 seasons.

West Ham reportedly will send the striker back on loan to Balaidos after confirming the transfer this month. The real question lies whether Gomez will opt for the move away to the London Stadium with players like Lucas Perez, Javier Hernandez and Andy Caroll also there to provide stiff competition.
