Match Reaction: Southampton vs Liverpool

0

Liverpool has gone up to 2nd in the Premier League today after beating Southampton 3-0 at St. Mary’s. Luis Suarez scored his first goal in six games to put The Reds 1-0 up in the first half, and Adam Lallana was denied an equaliser by the post before Raheeem Sterling made it 2-0. In the end, a comfortable victory for Liverpool was topped off with a late Steven Gerrard penalty after Luis Suarez was fouled by Jose Fonte.

Howvever, 3-0 doesn’t tell the complete story, as Southampton caused Liverpool some major problems in the first half, trying to expose the recent shaky defense that’s been seen of late. After the game, captain and goalscorer Steven Gerrard spoke to SkySports

“We said at the beginning of the season that we wanted to be in the title race with ten games to go and we are. It’s important to stay calm and take every game as it comes.”

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers also spoke after the match, and again tried to play down his team’s title chances,

“Tactically the players were great. We got three goals and in the end could have had five or six. The performance was up there with when we beat Arsenal 5-1. This is a really difficult place to come, it was an outstanding all-round team performance.”

“How many of the next 10 games do we need to win? I don’t know, I’m not going to give you an answer, all I want to do is sit back and enjoy watching the team play.”

Liverpool are now second and just 4 points behind leaders Chelsea, though Manchester City do have two games in hand over them, siting two points behind.

Chelsea unbeaten run continues

0

Chelsea have managed to pull themselves four points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 3-1 win against bottom of the table Fulham. After a goalless first half, goalscorer Andre Schurrle managed to bag a hat-trick for the Blues in 16 minutes. Fulham’s Johnny Heitinga managed to pull one back for the Cottagers but it wasn’t going to be anything more than a consolation. Fulham are now five points from safety and haven’t won in eight league games.

Chelsea on the other hand are now unbeaten in 12 league matches since their 3-2 loss to Stoke back in December. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who was caught on camera appearing to criticize his strikers’ lack of goals, left Samuel Eto’o out of his squad entirely, starting with Fernando Torres up front, but it was Schurrle who did the damage. Eden Hazard played his part as well, setting up Schurrle twice and being at the centre of everything in the second half. For Schurrle’s first goal, Hazard clipped the ball over the top, leaving Schurrle to take it round Dan Burn and slot it past Stekelenburg.

The pair combined again for the second, dinked the ball to Schurrle in the penalty box for a simple chance and Torres repeated this trick to set Schurrle up for the third Chelsea goal. Fulham then pushed on and managed to pull one back after the ball found its way into the penalty box, where Darren Bent played a sharp pass across goal to Heitinga who converted the chance. Fulham substitutes Lewis Holtby and Giorgos Karagounis gave the Cottagers some more life, but the damage had already been done. Plus, Fulham had to deal with an injury earlier on, as Brede Hangeland was replaced by Dan Burn after a nasty clash of heads with team-mate Kieran Richardson

Fulham boss Felix Magath had this to say after the game:

“Chelsea were too good for us. They played very well, wanted to win and were the better team. There were some good situations for us in the first half but we are responsible for not playing so well. We will not stay up with this kind of defending and need to learn better.

“The biggest problem was that our captain[Brede Hangeland] was gone after a few minutes. If he could have played the whole game, we could have had a different result. You cannot ask for a win against the Premier League leaders, so the next games are the ones we will be looking to win.”

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho: “At half-time, I told them nothing – nothing – not a word. I walked in, then I walked out. I don’t know if anyone else gave a team talk. I was not inside the dressing room. The second half was a great reaction to the worst performance of the season.

“The second half was one of the best performances of the season. We moved the ball around well. If I could’ve made 11 changes, I might have done, but I could only make three – so I did nothing.

“Schurrle is cold in front of the goal.

“We have have four points more than Arsenal. The gap to Man City is a fake advantage. If they win their games in hand, they’re top of the league. We’re behind them.”

Chelsea’s hat-trick hero Andre Schurrle: “The most important thing was the points. With the three goals for me, it’s a perfect day. The manager said little at half-time, telling us to get on with it.

“This is the spirit of the team. We played very poorly in the first half and very well in the second. The players were a little tired after Wednesday but we showed our quality.”

Newcastle boss apologises for Meyler headbutt

0

Pardew was dismissed for the incident during the second half of the Magpies’ 4-1 victory at the KC Stadium.

The 52-year-old said: “I did not mean any damage to the guy but I have moved my head forward. I tried to push him away with my head but I should not have done that.

“I apologise to everyone. I should not have got involved in it.”

With the Magpies 3-1 up, Pardew was angered when Meyler shoved past him in an attempt to retrieve the ball to take a throw-in.

The pair came together, with the former Reading and Southampton boss pushing his head into the face of the Hull player.

A fracas involving players and staff from both sides followed and, when the crowd was dispersed, Meyler was booked and Pardew sent from the touchline.

The Newcastle boss, who in 2012 was given a two-game ban for pushing an assistant referee, added: “It was a situation where I should not have been there.

“I will sit down from now on and send [assistant manager] John Carver out there.”

Pardew admitted his behaviour had “taken the gloss off a magnificent performance from my team”.

He added: “The players were terrific; it was only myself who had a poor performance all-round. I am very, very pleased with the team but very upset with myself.”

Shortly after full-time, but before Pardew apologised, a leading bookmaker suspended betting on the next Premier League manager to be sacked.

Hull boss Steve Bruce sympathised with his Newcastle counterpart because of the “pressure” managers are under, and also praised Meyler for staying on his feet.

Bruce told BBC Radio 5 live: “I’m sure Alan’s absolutely regretting it and questioning himself, asking ‘how the hell have I done that?’.

“The pressure on all Premier League managers is enormous. It’s not like Alan, he’s an established Premier League manager.

“I’m delighted with the reaction of David Meyler because other people would’ve been rolling round the floor. We’ve all done silly things in the heat of the moment.”

Stoke City shock title-chasers Arsenal

0

A Jonathan Walters second-half penalty was enough to give Stoke City a shock, but deserved 1-0 victory over Arsenal this afternoon at the Britannia Stadium, which now leaves Arsene Wenger’s men four points behind league-leaders Chelsea.

In what provides to be an always feisty affair due to their recent history, Stoke and Arsenal once again did battle with the atmosphere as hot as ever in Stoke, and it was the hosts that came away victorious after Laurent Koscielny conceded a penalty for a blatant handball.

Walters, who won the penalty, is known for missing most of his spot-kick opportunities, but with this one, he made no mistake as he rolled it past Wojciech Szczesny.

Despite throughout the game having 10 attempts, Arsenal only managed two on target and despite also having most of the possession, they failed to make that count, and they now will be looking over their shoulders for rivals, rather than look ahead at Chelsea.

If Liverpool see of Southampton in the late kick-off, The Gunners will slip to third, which will most likely see them slip to fourth if Manchester City win both their games in hand.

Here is some match reaction from after the game.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger: “It’s a big worry to lose a game like that, it was a massive setback.”

“I felt we had a good defensive performance and overall we are unlucky to lose this game. Offensively we didn’t create enough and our offensive game was poor considering our standards. At the end of the day we didn’t score because of that. We conceded a goal that was a nice gift from the referee but it can happen.”

“He [Koscienly] is one yard away. How can he take his hand away? He has no time to take his hand away from the ball. There’s is no intention at all but I feel we cannot influence the decision of the referee. I feel going forward we were not good enough to create chances and that’s why we were punished.”

“You have to give Stoke credit, they defended well with resilience and made the game very physical. But we didn’t cope well enough with it and we got punished.”

Stoke manager Mark Hughes: “I thought we were excellent from start to finish. We restricted Arsenal to very few opportunities. We had really good chances ourselves as well, apart from what was obviously a clear-cut penalty – I think there’s no doubt about that.

“We’re delighted. It’s difficult when you go up against a team like Arsenal – they will try and probe and create, but I thought we coped fairly well with them. I thought we had more intensity and drive in our play than they did, and as a consequence we were able to nullify them quite easily.”

“I just saw it as the ball bouncing around there, then it bounces up – it was awkward obviously for Koscielny, but it’s clearly hit his hand. I’m surprised that Arsenal think it isn’t (a penalty).. then again, maybe I’m not!”

Liverpool and Man United join chase for Inter Milan Prospect

0

The full-back, who is currently on loan at Livorno, is also being trailed by Lazio and Juventus, who are both believed to have had offers rebuffed during the last transfer window.

Mbaye, 19, has made 20 league appearances this season and Inter, mindful of interest from clubs from across Europe, are keen to extend his current deal beyond the summer of 2016.

The ÂŁ2.2m-rated defender was part of the Inter team which won the NextGen Series youth competition in 2012.

Mats Hummels to deny Manchester United if they miss Champions League place

0

David Moyes’ side are struggling to compete in the Premier League, and have seen Liverpool take pole position in the race for fourth.

Dortmund centre-back Hummels is considered to be one of the finest ball-playing defenders in the game, and United are keen on bringing in a top replacement for the outgoing Nemanja Vidic.

However the German has his heart set on a move to Spanish champions Barcelona, who can guarantee him the domestic and European glory he craves.

Reports in Spain claim the Catalan club have held talks with Hummels as they seek to replace injury-hit veteran Carles Puyol, and the lure of playing alongside some of the world’s best players could trump any deal United put on the table.

Despite the rumours, Moyes feels that the Red Devils stand a chance of landing the ex-Bayern Munich youngster if they join Europe’s elite next season, and will look to match any fee offered by Barcelona.

Arsenal hopeful of clinching Alvaro Morata deal

0

Arsenal are hopeful of finally signing Alvaro Morata at the end of the season after the Real Madrid striker reportedly agreed terms on a move to the Emirates Stadium. The Gunners were close to signing Morata on loan in January with the player keen on more game time.

The deal didn’t end up happening, despite Arsenal’s offer of a ÂŁ2m loan fee, but reports are now claiming a permanent deal switch is on the cards this summer. According to AS, Morata has agreed terms on a five-year contract with Arsenal that would see him scoop ÂŁ100,000 a week. It now seems Morata is ready to leave his boyhood club.

Arsene Wenger is said to be delighted with the news, but the club are yet to agree on a fee with the Spanish side – something that could still scupper this transfer from happening. Real have previously ruled out selling Morata, who is seen as a future star for both his club and country, and it is believed they would want a fee in excess of ÂŁ15m to let him leave.

And Arsenal may be willing to pay that sum as the Gunners have made signing a striker their top priority in the summer, with the club currently short on forward options.

Santi Cazorla ready to sign new Arsenal contract alongside Mertesacker and Rosicky

0

Santi Cazorla is set to become the third senior Arsenal player to agree a new contract.

The Spain midfielder has been in talks with club chiefs about signing an improved deal that will keep him at the Emirates Stadium until 2017 – his current contract ends in 2016

Sportsmail understands that Arsenal and Cazorla, who turned 29 in December, are close to finalising terms that will lift his salary to around ÂŁ80,000-a-week.

Cazorla’s new deal is set to be announced as part of a package with senior team-mates Per Mertesacker and Tomas Rosicky.

Mertesacker, 29, has approved a new deal that will tie him to the club until the summer of 2017, while Rosicky, 33, has agreed a new one-year rolling contract.

Arsene Wenger revealed after Arsenal’s victory over Sunderland last weekend that Rosicky had agreed fresh terms and it is believed that Mertesacker and now Cazorla are close to following suit.

However, Arsenal have not yet secured the future of one of their longest-serving players, defender Bacary Sagna, who is out of contract in the summer and has offers on the table from a string of clubs,
including Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco, Inter Milan and Galatasaray.

Cazorla has been a virtual ever-present in Wenger’s team since joining from Malaga in the summer of 2012 – making 81 appearances and scoring 18 goals. He has played principally on the flanks following the ÂŁ42.5million club-record signing of Mesut Ozil last August but his technique, touch and combination play is considered by Wenger to be crucial to his side’s style of play.

Gunners chiefs, led by contract negotiator Dicky Law, have been busy over the last year securing the futures of the club’s most influential players.

British sextet Jack Wilshere, Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Kieran Gibbs and Carl Jenkinson all signed new deals just over 12 months ago, while goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny penned an improved contract earlier in the season.

Is Freiburg’s Matthias Ginter the answer for Man United at the back? h

0

Manchester United manager Moyes was at the game between Hertha Berlin and Freiburg, checking on the latter’s ÂŁ10million-rated defender Matthias Ginter.

The 20-year-old is rated as one of the best young centre-backs in Germany and has attracted interest from Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

Moyes needs to recruit at least one central defender for the outgoing Premier League champions this summer with Nemanja Vidic leaving and Rio Ferdinand likely to follow him.

United have the weekend off, with the Manchester derby originally scheduled for this weekend having been moved to March 25 because of City’s involvement in the Capital One Cup Final.

Liverpool eyeing Caulker move!

0

Liverpool are ready to offer former Tottenham defender Steven Caulker a way out of Cardiff if the Bluebirds fail to avoid the drop this season. Caulker has been in impressive form for Cardiff so far after an ÂŁ8.5m move in the summer and he has been rewarded with a call up to Roy Hodgson’s 30-man England squad to face Denmark this week.

However, the player’s efforts may not be enough to keep the Bluebirds in the Premier League and reports are suggesting Liverpool will swoop for Caulker in the summer should the Welsh side get relegated. Brendan Rodgers has spent a season working with the defender before when he signed him on loan at his time with Swansea and he is convinced that Caulker is the answer to some of Liverpool’s defensive problems.

Kolo Toure has failed to live up to expectations at Anfield, while the normally reliable pairing of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel have both had shaky moments of their own these past few weeks. Mamadou Sakho has missed Liverpool’s last eight games through injury but he is closing in on a return and Tiago Ilori is on loan at Spanish side Granada.

And while Roy Hodgson says Caulker is unlikely to make the plane to Brazil, Rodgers is convinced there is a role for the player at Anfield.

David Moyes will need ÂŁ200m to get Manchester United back on top

0

“Just when it seemed Manchester United were settling down, following their win over Crystal Palace, they turned in what David Moyes freely admitted was a bewilderingly poor performance against Olympiakos.”

“Inevitably the spotlight is back on David, something he had to get accustomed to quickly after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson.”

“The first thing to say is that none of the English clubs have covered themselves with glory in the Champions League over the last week or so. Chelsea were the pick, with a draw against Galatasaray.”

“There is no hiding that United’s performance and result in Greece were a long way from what David expected. The Champions League is United’s last chance of success this season — and they know they’re up against it following their 2-0 defeat.”

“This has been a tough learning curve for David and he will be assessing how he attacks the job in the future. He knows he must re-establish United to where they need to be.”

“Everyone knew it would be difficult for the man who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson but I don’t think David would have thought it was going to be this much of a challenge.”

“I hope that, in the end, he will become as successful as his predecessor. There was a transition when Sir Alex went to United but in the modern day game, David knows he will not be accorded the same sort of time as back then. These days, you have to work as quickly as you can.”

“I would say he has found out an awful lot about his squad of players over the past few months. He will have seen them from the outside but you don’t really get to know players until you work with them regularly.”

“Come the end of the season, he will have to make some tough decisions about a number of players, decisions we, as managers, all have to make.”

“Robin van Persie’s comments on Dutch TV that other United players are taking his space have added fuel to the fire but to suggest, as some have, that the striker is criticising his manager’s tactics is stretching things way too far.”

“These days, when a manager is having a bad time, almost every word is examined and often misconstrued to pile on more pressure.”

That’s why, as I pointed out at a London Press Club Q&A earlier this week, it is very difficult to answer questions openly any more. It pays, these days, to be constantly on your guard.

“With regard to United, it is undeniable that most of the players who did so well last season, are not performing anywhere near as effectively this year.”

“I expected their squad to be more self-motivated. Whenever I spoke to Sir Alex, especially in more recent times, he said the early days of the hairdryer were rarely needed — the history and achievements of one of the best clubs in the world demanded that players were always 100 per cent motivated.”

“Part of the problem could be the transitional period in which the club are in. Three of the back four, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, could all be moving on soon and because they are all still top players, they will probably already have a good idea of where they will be going.”

“Here at West Ham it’s slightly different. We have players such as George McCartney, Matt Taylor, Jack Collison and Joe Cole who are busting a gut to do well when they have an opportunity because they are fighting for new contracts.”

“David is left with having to make more decisions about players at the end of the season than he expected. It looks like he will have to plan a rebuild and for a club like United, that could mean an outlay of ÂŁ200million.”

“As a manager, it is almost expected that your first rebuild is when you come into a club unless you inherit, ironically, as good a squad as Roberto Martinez has at Everton. Then it’s about reaffirming your position and doing as well as the manager you have succeeded.”

“The hard bit, even if you are United, is finding the players. They didn’t do that last summer and that’s probably one of things David now regrets.”

“He may have thought it was a big, strong squad — one which had just run away with the Premier League title — and that it just needed some tinkering.”

United winger on Everton wishlist

0

The 28-year-old will have only 12 months remaining on his contract at Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens and he has come in for criticism from the home faithful this term after a string of under-par performances.

With the emergence of exciting youngster Adnan Januzaj, who can operate on both flanks, and the January acquisition of playmaker Juan Mata from Chelsea, competition for a regular spot in the starting line-up has heated up.

A source close to Everton told FDN that the Toffees are looking at potential alternatives to Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu, in case they miss out on his permanent signature at the end of the campaign.

Valencia is high on the list of other options and the hope is that he will be available for a relatively modest transfer fee, given the short length of time remaining on his United deal.

League Cup Final preview.

0

Manchester City and Sunderland head south tomorrow to contest the League Cup Final, with both sides looking to win the first official silverware of the season at Wembley.

Sunderland have had a superb run to Wembley, beating Chelsea in a 4-3 thriller at the Stadium of Light in December, and then winning on penalties over two legs against a beleaguered  Manchester United side, in a rather dramatic semi-final in January.

The Blackcats have endured a tough season, but have thrived in Cup competitions especially, spearheaded under recently appointed manager Gus Poyet, who has changed the fortunes of the club, however, they are still deeply embroiled in a relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League.

Poyet this week said that he’d rather survive in the Premier League than win this domestic trophy, however, the prospect of the Cup win would be too good to turn down for the former Brighton boss.

Poyet will be sweating on the fitness of Scottish striker Steven Fletcher, whilst goalkeeper Kieran Westwood is the other casualty, with the Irish keeper out with a shoulder inury.

This means heroic Italian Vito Mannone will retain his place in goal for the Cup Final showpiece, with the keeper hoping he can celebrate his Birthday with the greatest present of all.

Adam Johnson will be looking to get one over on his old club, with the maverick winger starring in Sunderland’s season so far, with many predicting a future England call up is on the cards.

Johnson stated that his side would “Go down in history”  if they won the Cup.

City are overwhelming favourites for the Cup Final of course, and make their third trip to Wembley in three years.

Pellegrini’s men have been in superb form this season, scoring over 100 goals and challenging for the Premier League title, the Citizens have also got out the group stages of the Champions League, something they failed to do under Mancini, however, they have an uphill battle if they are to beat Barcelona at the Nou Camp, and advance to the next stage.

City have stuttered somewhat in their last few League games, but got back on track thanks to a Yaya Toure winner against Stoke City.

And City will be able to rely upon Sergio Aguero, who returned to first team training this week, and could be back to spearhead the attack, in place of Stevan Jovetic (hamstring).

Defender Matija Nastasic is also out injured, he too has a Hamstring injury ahead of the Final.

City will be looking to have a better experience of Wembley after their last trip in May, as Wigan Athletic stunned the Citizens with Ben Watson heading in a stoppage time winner to win it for the Latics.

It is also City’s first League Cup final appearance since 1976, when they  overcame Sunderland’s North East rivals, Newcastle, winning 2-1 at the Old Wembley.

Sunderland do have a decent record against the big spending City, as Phil Bardsley scored the winner in a 1-0 win.

Ronaldo turned down Barcelona move

0

Ex-Blancos President Ramon Calderon has revealed that Barcelona tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, but he turned the opportunity down to join Real Madrid for a world record fee.

The Portugal icon joined the Bernabeu from Manchester United  in 2009 for a world record sum of ÂŁ80m and has been a major hit in the capital, earning the Ballon D’Or 2013 for his world class performances for both club and country.

However ex-President Calderon has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson had tried to complete the deal to send Ronaldo to Barcelona, but he refused. When asked whether Ferguson did try to make the move happen, Calderon told talkSPORT“It is totally true. In the few weeks he tried to avoid him going to Real Madrid, offering him to Barcelona.

“Barcelona were very happy but in that moment it was very crucial as Ronaldo said: ‘I’m not going to any other club but Real Madrid.’‏

“That’s why we signed the deal. Everyone was happy: Manchester United got the ÂŁ80 million, Real Madrid got the best player in the world and Cristiano got what he wanted because players like him are not only looking for money, they look for glory, and they look for anyone who is giving them that opportunity to win titles, to be the best in the world, to win golden boots.

“There are only three, four or five clubs that can give him what he wants.”

In this league campaign alone, Ronaldo has managed 22 goals from 21 appearances to send his side to the top of the table.

Liverpool Prepare Stunning Move to Re-Sign Chelsea Forward Fernando Torres

0

Liverpool are reportedly ready to make an offer to re-sign Chelsea striker Fernando Torres in the summer

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers will apparently look to bring in the experienced Spaniard to boost his attack, with recent signing Iago Aspas failing to make an impact and with loaned out Italian Fabio Borini likely to make a permanent exit.

Rodgers feels that Torres can provide invaluable European experience next season if Liverpool can secure a Champions League berth, as a supporting option for in-form strike-pair Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Chelsea spent ÂŁ50m to sign Torres back in January 2011 but the World Cup winner has failed to come anywhere near living up to that British transfer record fee, scoring 19 goals in 99 Premier League appearances and a total of 42 in 154 games across all competitions.

One would imagine that it would take a decent sum to re-sign Torres but almost certainly less than half that paid by the West London club three years ago.

Jose Mourinho may well be ready to offload Torres, as well as fellow misfiring striker Demba Ba, with Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o likely to also leave Chelsea when his contract with the club comes to an end in the summer.
