Liverpool eyeing Caulker move!

0

Liverpool are ready to offer former Tottenham defender Steven Caulker a way out of Cardiff if the Bluebirds fail to avoid the drop this season. Caulker has been in impressive form for Cardiff so far after an £8.5m move in the summer and he has been rewarded with a call up to Roy Hodgson’s 30-man England squad to face Denmark this week.

However, the player’s efforts may not be enough to keep the Bluebirds in the Premier League and reports are suggesting Liverpool will swoop for Caulker in the summer should the Welsh side get relegated. Brendan Rodgers has spent a season working with the defender before when he signed him on loan at his time with Swansea and he is convinced that Caulker is the answer to some of Liverpool’s defensive problems.

Kolo Toure has failed to live up to expectations at Anfield, while the normally reliable pairing of Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel have both had shaky moments of their own these past few weeks. Mamadou Sakho has missed Liverpool’s last eight games through injury but he is closing in on a return and Tiago Ilori is on loan at Spanish side Granada.

And while Roy Hodgson says Caulker is unlikely to make the plane to Brazil, Rodgers is convinced there is a role for the player at Anfield.

David Moyes will need £200m to get Manchester United back on top

0

“Just when it seemed Manchester United were settling down, following their win over Crystal Palace, they turned in what David Moyes freely admitted was a bewilderingly poor performance against Olympiakos.”

“Inevitably the spotlight is back on David, something he had to get accustomed to quickly after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson.”

“The first thing to say is that none of the English clubs have covered themselves with glory in the Champions League over the last week or so. Chelsea were the pick, with a draw against Galatasaray.”

“There is no hiding that United’s performance and result in Greece were a long way from what David expected. The Champions League is United’s last chance of success this season — and they know they’re up against it following their 2-0 defeat.”

“This has been a tough learning curve for David and he will be assessing how he attacks the job in the future. He knows he must re-establish United to where they need to be.”

“Everyone knew it would be difficult for the man who replaced Sir Alex Ferguson but I don’t think David would have thought it was going to be this much of a challenge.”

“I hope that, in the end, he will become as successful as his predecessor. There was a transition when Sir Alex went to United but in the modern day game, David knows he will not be accorded the same sort of time as back then. These days, you have to work as quickly as you can.”

“I would say he has found out an awful lot about his squad of players over the past few months. He will have seen them from the outside but you don’t really get to know players until you work with them regularly.”

“Come the end of the season, he will have to make some tough decisions about a number of players, decisions we, as managers, all have to make.”

“Robin van Persie’s comments on Dutch TV that other United players are taking his space have added fuel to the fire but to suggest, as some have, that the striker is criticising his manager’s tactics is stretching things way too far.”

“These days, when a manager is having a bad time, almost every word is examined and often misconstrued to pile on more pressure.”

That’s why, as I pointed out at a London Press Club Q&A earlier this week, it is very difficult to answer questions openly any more. It pays, these days, to be constantly on your guard.

“With regard to United, it is undeniable that most of the players who did so well last season, are not performing anywhere near as effectively this year.”

“I expected their squad to be more self-motivated. Whenever I spoke to Sir Alex, especially in more recent times, he said the early days of the hairdryer were rarely needed — the history and achievements of one of the best clubs in the world demanded that players were always 100 per cent motivated.”

“Part of the problem could be the transitional period in which the club are in. Three of the back four, Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra, could all be moving on soon and because they are all still top players, they will probably already have a good idea of where they will be going.”

“Here at West Ham it’s slightly different. We have players such as George McCartney, Matt Taylor, Jack Collison and Joe Cole who are busting a gut to do well when they have an opportunity because they are fighting for new contracts.”

“David is left with having to make more decisions about players at the end of the season than he expected. It looks like he will have to plan a rebuild and for a club like United, that could mean an outlay of £200million.”

“As a manager, it is almost expected that your first rebuild is when you come into a club unless you inherit, ironically, as good a squad as Roberto Martinez has at Everton. Then it’s about reaffirming your position and doing as well as the manager you have succeeded.”

“The hard bit, even if you are United, is finding the players. They didn’t do that last summer and that’s probably one of things David now regrets.”

“He may have thought it was a big, strong squad — one which had just run away with the Premier League title — and that it just needed some tinkering.”

United winger on Everton wishlist

0

The 28-year-old will have only 12 months remaining on his contract at Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens and he has come in for criticism from the home faithful this term after a string of under-par performances.

With the emergence of exciting youngster Adnan Januzaj, who can operate on both flanks, and the January acquisition of playmaker Juan Mata from Chelsea, competition for a regular spot in the starting line-up has heated up.

A source close to Everton told FDN that the Toffees are looking at potential alternatives to Barcelona loanee Gerard Deulofeu, in case they miss out on his permanent signature at the end of the campaign.

Valencia is high on the list of other options and the hope is that he will be available for a relatively modest transfer fee, given the short length of time remaining on his United deal.

League Cup Final preview.

0

Manchester City and Sunderland head south tomorrow to contest the League Cup Final, with both sides looking to win the first official silverware of the season at Wembley.

Sunderland have had a superb run to Wembley, beating Chelsea in a 4-3 thriller at the Stadium of Light in December, and then winning on penalties over two legs against a beleaguered  Manchester United side, in a rather dramatic semi-final in January.

The Blackcats have endured a tough season, but have thrived in Cup competitions especially, spearheaded under recently appointed manager Gus Poyet, who has changed the fortunes of the club, however, they are still deeply embroiled in a relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League.

Poyet this week said that he’d rather survive in the Premier League than win this domestic trophy, however, the prospect of the Cup win would be too good to turn down for the former Brighton boss.

Poyet will be sweating on the fitness of Scottish striker Steven Fletcher, whilst goalkeeper Kieran Westwood is the other casualty, with the Irish keeper out with a shoulder inury.

This means heroic Italian Vito Mannone will retain his place in goal for the Cup Final showpiece, with the keeper hoping he can celebrate his Birthday with the greatest present of all.

Adam Johnson will be looking to get one over on his old club, with the maverick winger starring in Sunderland’s season so far, with many predicting a future England call up is on the cards.

Johnson stated that his side would “Go down in history”  if they won the Cup.

City are overwhelming favourites for the Cup Final of course, and make their third trip to Wembley in three years.

Pellegrini’s men have been in superb form this season, scoring over 100 goals and challenging for the Premier League title, the Citizens have also got out the group stages of the Champions League, something they failed to do under Mancini, however, they have an uphill battle if they are to beat Barcelona at the Nou Camp, and advance to the next stage.

City have stuttered somewhat in their last few League games, but got back on track thanks to a Yaya Toure winner against Stoke City.

And City will be able to rely upon Sergio Aguero, who returned to first team training this week, and could be back to spearhead the attack, in place of Stevan Jovetic (hamstring).

Defender Matija Nastasic is also out injured, he too has a Hamstring injury ahead of the Final.

City will be looking to have a better experience of Wembley after their last trip in May, as Wigan Athletic stunned the Citizens with Ben Watson heading in a stoppage time winner to win it for the Latics.

It is also City’s first League Cup final appearance since 1976, when they  overcame Sunderland’s North East rivals, Newcastle, winning 2-1 at the Old Wembley.

Sunderland do have a decent record against the big spending City, as Phil Bardsley scored the winner in a 1-0 win.

Ronaldo turned down Barcelona move

0

Ex-Blancos President Ramon Calderon has revealed that Barcelona tried to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, but he turned the opportunity down to join Real Madrid for a world record fee.

The Portugal icon joined the Bernabeu from Manchester United  in 2009 for a world record sum of £80m and has been a major hit in the capital, earning the Ballon D’Or 2013 for his world class performances for both club and country.

However ex-President Calderon has revealed that Sir Alex Ferguson had tried to complete the deal to send Ronaldo to Barcelona, but he refused. When asked whether Ferguson did try to make the move happen, Calderon told talkSPORT“It is totally true. In the few weeks he tried to avoid him going to Real Madrid, offering him to Barcelona.

“Barcelona were very happy but in that moment it was very crucial as Ronaldo said: ‘I’m not going to any other club but Real Madrid.’‏

“That’s why we signed the deal. Everyone was happy: Manchester United got the £80 million, Real Madrid got the best player in the world and Cristiano got what he wanted because players like him are not only looking for money, they look for glory, and they look for anyone who is giving them that opportunity to win titles, to be the best in the world, to win golden boots.

“There are only three, four or five clubs that can give him what he wants.”

In this league campaign alone, Ronaldo has managed 22 goals from 21 appearances to send his side to the top of the table.

Liverpool Prepare Stunning Move to Re-Sign Chelsea Forward Fernando Torres

0

Liverpool are reportedly ready to make an offer to re-sign Chelsea striker Fernando Torres in the summer

Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers will apparently look to bring in the experienced Spaniard to boost his attack, with recent signing Iago Aspas failing to make an impact and with loaned out Italian Fabio Borini likely to make a permanent exit.

Rodgers feels that Torres can provide invaluable European experience next season if Liverpool can secure a Champions League berth, as a supporting option for in-form strike-pair Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Chelsea spent £50m to sign Torres back in January 2011 but the World Cup winner has failed to come anywhere near living up to that British transfer record fee, scoring 19 goals in 99 Premier League appearances and a total of 42 in 154 games across all competitions.

One would imagine that it would take a decent sum to re-sign Torres but almost certainly less than half that paid by the West London club three years ago.

Jose Mourinho may well be ready to offload Torres, as well as fellow misfiring striker Demba Ba, with Cameroon international Samuel Eto’o likely to also leave Chelsea when his contract with the club comes to an end in the summer.

Wenger claims the Premier League is best

0

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger still considers the Premier League to be the best in the world despite its European struggles. Of the four English sides left in the UEFA Champions League, only Chelsea managed to get anything from their match and they were also the only English team to find the target.

Chelsea drew 1-1 with Galatasaray, while Man United, Arsenal and Man City lost their respective games against Olympiakos, Bayern Munich and Barcelona. Swansea’s continental adventure has also come to an end, with Tottenham left to fly the Europa League flag. A collection of lacklustre performances has drawn criticism but Wenger believes the competitiveness of the league still makes it the best in the world as well as its entertainment and spectator appeal.

He said: “I maintain it is the best, despite the results. It is the most levelled league. There is not the difference if you take the difference of quality, for example, between Bayern Munich and the rest of the German league. You have Bayern, Dortmund, then there is a big gap.

“In the Premier League you can go to Cardiff, anybody, and lose. Spain was a good league as well. But this season the English league is the most difficult. Maybe as well we pay a little bit of the price for that. Of course, when we play against Bayern you cannot say it is a comparison of the two leagues – it is a comparison of the teams, and they are one of the top ones in Europe.”

Wenger has also claimed that because of this competitiveness, it leaves the top teams tired when they travel abroad for the European competition. He added:

“We pay the price because of the toughness, the intensity maybe. In every game you just have to focus on getting the best team out. It is because of the competitiveness. If you speak to Manuel Pellegrini and Mesut Ozil they will tell you the same. But if you look in the last 10 years, the English clubs in the Champions League have done extremely well.

“If you play against Barcelona, Real Madrid and Bayern you can lose.”

Wenger: Ozil going through difficult time

0

Arsene Wenger has said that he will not allow Mesut Ozil to shoulder the burden for Arsenal’s Premier League title drive. Wenger has backed Ozil to get back to top form thanks to a two day break to clear his head after a crucial penalty miss against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Ozil will be returning to action this Saturday as Arsenal face Stoke. Arsene Wenger said about Ozil: “It is difficult for him mentally to be confronted with that pressure every three days and in every single competition, but he will adapt.

“He has gone a little bit through a difficult time. It can happen to anybody.

“So have others in the past, and so I don’t worry about Ozil.”

Arsenal are currently sitting in second, just one point behind league leaders Chelsea. Only four points currently separate the top four. Wenger believes Ozil should not heap pressure upon himself to be a constant threat for Arsenal. He said:

“He shouldn’t do that. It’s down to the performance of the team. I never tell him ‘you have to win us the game’. He’s all right.

“He loves to play. You give him a ball, he’s happy. That’s the most important thing. And he has the quality, so I don’t worry. We have the experience to do that: you have always got to be behind your players.

“The best way is to show him support.”

Petition to ban Tom Cleverley from England’s World Cup squad

0

Thousands of football fans have signed a petition to try and ban Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley from being selected for England’s World Cup squad this summer. The new petition now has over 3000 signatures.

The petition says, ‘Tom Cleverley has 13 England caps, and is often selected for Roy Hodgeson’s England squads without possessing any genuine qualities whatsoever.”

“We believe in the reputation of this proud footballing nation and that he should be prevented from attending this summer’s national showcase. Whilst England are considered to disappoint at national tornaments, further embaressment could be avoided by not having his inept performances undermine the rest of team’s efforts.”

Much like his United team mates, Cleverley has failed to recapture the form that has caused Sir Alex Ferguson in the past to refer to him as a ‘special’ player.

Man United want Savic!

0

Former Manchester City defender Stefan Savic has emerged as a shock candidate to replace Nemanja Vidic at Manchester United, according to reports in Italy. David Moyes is currently on the lookout for a replacement for Vidic, who has said he is leaving the club this summer.

United have been linked with several potential replacements before now – most notably Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala and Benfica’s Ezequiel Garay – but Tuttosport is now saying Savic is the man to replace him. The centre-back joined Fiorentina from Man City back in 2012 in a swap deal for Matija Nastasic. The defender has managed to rebuild his reputation at the Italian club after an erratic season at Man City. Now, David Moyes wants to bring him back to the Premier League.

It has been claimed that Man United initially asked Fiorentina for a move after loaning Anderson to the Italian side in January. But Fiorentina are currently unwilling to part with Savic, who has 24 caps for Montenegro.

Ten reasons why United have struggled.

0

Following Tuesday’s humbling defeat against Olympiakos, Manchester United look odds on not to win a trophy this season, in a real horror first season for recently appointed manager David Moyes.

League inconsistency and players not performing in big games have been just two of the reasons for United’s current blip.

The Red Devils currently occupy 6th place in the Premier League, and look like missing out on Europe next season all together.

Recently retired footballer, and former United academy player Robbie Savage has listed ten mistakes that Moyes has made during his relatively short time at Old Trafford to date.

1- Moyes hasn’t been himself.

Savage states that Moyes has struggled at Old Trafford, due to the fact that he “is not being himself” due to that he is fearful of a backlash from disgruntled United supporters, who are already calling for his head.

Savage has also argued that Moyes had done what is best for the supporters, hence not substituting Robin Van Persie in the recent home defeat against Newcastle United.

2- “Bust in the big games”

United have really struggled against the ‘top teams’ in this current season,  with Moyes’ side winning just one game, from nine games played against the rest of the top six.

Defeats against Tottenham, Everton, Liverpool, Chelsea, and a humbling 4-1 defeat against arch rivals City have all been major concerns, to the supporters, and Moyes alike.

3- No transfer tenacity.

Moyes spent big in the summer to try and attempt to overhaul the squad left by Ferguson, spending a staggering amount on Maurone Fellaini.

Fellaini joined for £26 million on transfer deadline day, and has failed to live up to expectations at Old Trafford since his move from Everton.

Yes United captured a very good player in Juan Mata, but the failure to land Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona has had an effect on that squad, as the former Arsenal man may have been the difference.

Moyes midfield has been poor beyond belief, with  Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Darren Fletcher, Shinji Kagawa and Fellaini have only scored two league goals between them this season.

4- Why goodbye.

United have let arguably their best centre back in Nemanja Vidic leave in the summer on a free transfer, with Inter Milan tying up a deal to take him to Serie A.

Vidic, in the games he has played this season, has been a rock in the heart of an ageing defence.

And with Rio Ferdinand all set to either retire or head off to the United States, Moyes may be regretting the option of letting Vicic leave, in the long term.

Patrice Evra is also set to leave Old Trafford for pastures new, with a host of clubs on the continent interested, after Moyes signalled his intentions to sign Luke Shaw from Southampton in the summer.

5-No starting XI Consistency.

Moyes’ beleaguered have really struggled in this certain area, which has probably conflicted to their current situation.

The United boss has failed to do what he did so well at Everton, and that is stick with the current team, at the current time.

6- A mixed up mentality.

Old Trafford used to be a real intimidating fortress in the Ferguson era, with sides bowing down to United’s sheer class.

However, this year, United have struggled at Old Trafford, with defeats against West Bromwich Albion, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United, to name a few.

Moyes’ under-performing men even struggled to a draw against Southampton.

United are no longer really attacking teams at home, with the red devils more than happy to sit back and defend.

7- The Media.

The media have also been a real problem for Moyes and his squad this season, with him and his players scape-goats to various tabloid Newspapers, with Media sources hounding upon every slight weakness that Moyes may show.

“I didn’t see it coming,” is how Moyes responded to defeat at Olympiakos.

Under Sir Alex Ferguson, who somewhat controlled the Media circus to a point, were he would ban Journalist’s from Old Trafford on a regular basis.

Moyes’ body language and mannerisms cut him as a lonely figure during interviews.

Ferguson also seemed to have a certain swagger in interviews, spewing his views on one topic, something that Moyes has failed to grasp as of yet.

8- Changes in the backroom.

The departures of Mike Phelan, Rene Meulensteen and Ed Steele have all had consequences upon United’s bizarre current situation.

The trio had a wealth of experience behind them, with each of them coaching for several years, another thing Moyes failed to grasp, when he appointed the un-proven Phil Neville.

Meulensteen has since been sacked by Fulham in recent weeks, however, he would have been a very good coach under Moyes at United.

9- Tactical problems.

Moyes has somewhat failed to recreate the tactics that Ferguson employed so well to his squad, with clubs treating United like any other team, and working them out on a regular basis, due to their constant policy of the same tactics.

Former Fulham manager and current defender Dan Burn said it was easy to play against United, during their recent 2-2 draw at Old Trafford.

Meulensteen stated…

“Their game plan was straightforward. They put crosses in from wide angles. We defended it well.

“I do think that a few teams have come here with a different approach. Teams have come to Old Trafford and got something.

“Teams are thinking that there is a chink in United’s armour. We set out as everyone can see, we made it very difficult for them.

“They have some problems of their own. They kept creating chances and crosses but we defended fantastically well. You think at the end all the hard work will slip away. But at the end, for Darren Bent to score that equaliser, it felt like a winner.”

Midfield inconsistency has also been a problem for United this season, with Tom Cleverley and Michael Carrick unable to start a real firm partnership.

10- He is NOT Sir Alex Ferguson.

Many United supporters presumed that Moyes would be a success early on, with the majority expecting the Scot to continue the work Fergie had done.

Ferguson won 13 Premier League titles during more than two decades in charge at Old Trafford, aswell as FA Cups, and the famous treble of 1999.

Andre Villas-Boas: ‘I want the Barcelona or Real Madrid job’

0

Andre Villas-Boas has admitted in an interview that he is ready to make a return to management this Summer, and is keen on bagging either the FC Barcelona or Real Madrid hot-seat.

Recently fired from Tottenham Hotspur for a run of bad results and a Summer of poor signings, AVB is on the look-out for a new project to get his hands on, and despite both Barca and Madrid having full-time managers at the moment, he has admitted that he would love to take over at one of those clubs one day.

After making a name for himself in Portugal with Porto, Villas-Boas then came over to England and managed Chelsea. However, his run at Stamford Bridge was shocking and he was soon fired and replaced by Roberto Di Matteo, who guided the club to Champions League glory.

The Portguese then took over at White Hart Lane after Harry Redknapp left, and he lasted longer there than what he did at Chelsea, but he was still not very successful and ended up getting the chop earlier this year.

However, despite the poor reputation recently, Boas is still confident that he can one day manage one of the best clubs in world football.

Villas-Boas said: ‘Barcelona and Real Madrid are two of the best teams in the world. I am a young coach and it would be a dream to train either Madrid or Barcelona.

‘I would like to get to know other leagues and I have had offers from various teams. From around next June I am sure I will be managing again.’

I accept when I’m dropped, says Hart

0

Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart has admitted that it was a challenging time for him in his career when he was dropped to the bench for his club after several blunders in between the sticks.

Due to numerous back-to-back errors, Manuel Pellegrini finally made the decision to bench Hart and play his back-up Costel Pantilimon instead.

The number-two ‘keeper played several games during Hart’s absense before the Englishman was re-called in December, and since then, Hart has been back to his top-form for City and he has admitted in an interview that it took a lot of strength to get over his blunders.

“You have to be able to accept when you are playing or not,” Hart, 26, told BBC One’s Football Focus ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final against Sunderland.

“After being dropped I just did what I always did – I went and trained hard and listened to what the manager had to say and knuckled down and got on with my job to the best of my ability.

“When managers have got decisions to make, whether it benefits me or not, I have to be man enough to take it.

“I work hard every day to win and I understand it doesn’t always go my way and you have to move forward.”

City are heading to Wembley on Sunday to face Sunderland in the Capital One Cup final, but Hart doesn’t know whether or not he will be playing due to Pantilimon playing most of the cup games this season.

“It is for the manager to decide. Costel has played most of the games and done well and played brilliant and not conceded a goal,” he added.

“It is a squad game, which I am learning more and more as I get older and the more and more I am involved in such a great side and squad.

“The manager is making a lot of good decisions at the moment and whether it is myself or Costel, we will play our hearts out for the team to get the result.”

Inter Milan keen on signing Chelsea striker

0

In a Summer which promises a lot of change for Italian side Inter Milan, they are putting all their eggs in one basket as they attempt to raid the Premier League for some of their talent.

With new owner, Erick Thohir, taking over the club, he has promised the fans that wholesale changes will be made in the Summer, including on the pitch as he attempts to bring the glory days back to the club that once one the treble, including the Champions League.

Inter are also 90% sure that they have signed Nemanja Vidic from Manchester United, and they are now ready to go for his team-mate Patrice Evra, as well as Chelsea striker Samuel Eto’o and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Etienne Capoue.

Chelsea signed Eto’o from Russian side Anzhi in the Summer, but since then, he has failed to shine in the Premier League, despite netting a hat-trick against Manchester United, and with recent comments made by Jose Mourinho about the striker’s age, a move could be on the cards.

Eto’o, who enjoyed a successful spell with Inter earlier in his career, has previously admitted that his dream is to return to La Liga in order to play for first-club Mallorca once again, but could a move to Inter interest him this Summer as Mourinho and Chelsea eye a top-European striker to help boost their title chances next season.

Lampard wants fixture solution.

0

Chelsea’s veteran midfielder Frank Lampard has called upon the Barclays Premier League for greater protection for English clubs playing in the Champions League, and the UEFA Europa League.

Lampard’s side face Fulham at Craven Cottage, in a West London derby on Saturday, just 72 hours after they drew 1-1 in Istanbul against Galatasaray.

However, the experienced 35 year old has called upon the powers that be to give Champions League sides special treatment before games in Europe.

Lampard wants the Premier League to switch some games to a Friday night, like they do in the German Bundesliga, or the Italian Serie A, to help sides prepare for up and coming Champions League games.

“It’s not ideal,” Lampard told the Daily Mail. “We don’t expect any favours and certainly know we won’t get them. It’s about resting up and getting ready to go.

“I don’t know about the Premier League but other countries seem to look after their teams representing them in the Champions League. I’m not sure we do so much here.

“I’m not trying to get one over on other Premier League teams, it just seems a general rule. There could be a bit of common sense if you are getting back at 6am (on Thursday).”

However, despite his frustration, Lampard backed the title-chasing Chelsea squad to cope with the rigours of their schedule.

“We can’t moan, we’ve got a fantastic squad with fit young players,” he added. “We have to get on with it.”
