Alan Hansen criticises Arsenal’s transfer window

0

BBC pundit Alan Hansen has ridiculed Arsenal’s summer transfer window so far and cannot believe that the club are yet to spend money on strengthening their squad.

A lot was expected of Arsenal in this transfer window after it was announced that they would have up to £70million to spend on making big-name signings, but so far, they have only managed to sign Auxerre striker Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer.

The club have been linked with names like Gonzalo Higuain, Stevan Jovetic, Wayne Rooney, Luis Suarez and Luiz Gustavo, but unfortunately for Arsene Wenger, none of the potential deals could materialise.

The add further salt to the wound, The Gunners started their Premier League campaign with a 3-1 home defeat to Aston Villa at the weekend and now face tricky ties against Fenerbache for a place in the Champions League.

Speaking to BBC’s Match of the Day 3, Hansen revealed that the club need to spend and need to add more depth to their side if they are to mount a serious challenge for silverware.

“Arsenal have had frailties for the last three or four years in certain positions,” said Hansen. “They have the money to fill those positions and Wenger hasn’t done so.

“The goalkeeper, back four and certainly a holding player that is destructive are much-needed.

“They have got multi-talented midfield players and the massive pace of Theo Walcott. OK, they haven’t got a potent goalscorer – but it’s when they haven’t got the ball that the problems are there as we saw against Aston Villa.”

Hansen added: “I’ve mentioned four or five positions he needs to fill but he also needs a leader on the pitch.

“Manchester United showed that last season how to pick up points when you play poorly. When Arsenal play poorly then usually it is a disaster.

“They need someone on the pitch that when it is going badly is going to say to the players, ‘right you get in that position and just sit for a while’.

“You never see that with Arsenal. You see that with every other team in the league, even for the poor teams you see somebody on the pitch being a leader. With Arsenal you never see it.”

Arsenal cannot miss out on Champions League, says Hansen

0

BBC pundit Alan Hansen has admitted that Arsenal need to progress into the Champions League proper this season and insists that it is unthinkable if they were to be knocked out by Fenerbache.

After an impressive end to last season, The Gunners managed to beat rivals Tottenham to fourth place and will now face Turkish side Fenerbache in a Champions League qualifier in order to get into the proper competition.

The first leg is in Turkey on Wednesday with the return-leg to be played the following Tuesday.

Arsene Wenger’s men started their campaign with a 3-1 loss to Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium and a lot of eyebrows are being raised about the club and many fans are worried that they are slowly declining year after year.

Hansen, who works on Match of the Day, believes it would be a disaster if Arsenal were to be beaten by Fenerbache and believes it would leave Wenger with just the two domestic cups to fight for.

“It’s unthinkable for Arsenal to go out of the Champions League,” said Hansen.

“They will be left with the League Cup and FA Cup as they aren’t going to win the title.

“The pressure is on Arsenal to finish in fourth position so you get a bit of leeway because the Champions League is not only great for revenue but also for supporters.

“It takes the pressure off you to a certain extent but if you haven’t got the Champions League then all the very best!”

Arsenal defender confident players can put things right

0

Arsenal defender Carl Jenkinson is confident that the players at the club have enough quality to turn things around and react positively after their opening day defeat at home to Aston Villa.

The Gunners will only have three days to think about their 3-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium as they head to Turkey to face Fenerbache in their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday night.

After the final whistle on Saturday, the home team were booed off by the fans and the majority of the ground were chanting for Wenger to spend some money, after they have gone the whole summer without spending anything.

It is a busy schedule for Wenger’s men as they have Fenerbache on Wednesday before playing Fulham on Saturday. They then play Fenerbache again the following Tuesday in the return leg before hosting Tottenham Hotspur in the league.

Despite getting off to a negative start, Jenkinson is confident that the players can bounce back and put things right.

“It could have been a completely different outcome on another day,” he told Arsenal Player. “We didn’t get the rub of the green and sometimes you don’t. That’s just how football is.

“We’re all incredibly disappointed and it’s a game that we should have and we need to be winning. We’ve got to bounce back because we’ve got a massive game in midweek.

“We want to be playing in the Champions League. It’s the pinnacle of football and it’s where this club belongs so we’ve got to get our heads straight and recover from this result. I’m confident we’ll do that because we’ve got a lot of characters in the dressing room.”

Jenkinson continued:

“It’s a marathon not a sprint. We’ve played one game and of course everyone is really disappointed,” he said. “You could hear that the fans are disappointed. They don’t want to see that at home.

“The only thing I can say is that we’re as disappointed as the fans. If you were in the dressing room after, you would have been able to tell that. Believe me, we’re going to fight to put things right.

“The season is a very long one and we’ve started poorly before and come back to have very strong seasons.

“We’ve lost one game. We shouldn’t look into things too much. There’s no denying we’re all really disappointed but as I’ve said, we’ll be battling to put things right and that starts in midweek.”

Olivier Giroud tells Arsene Wenger to sign a striker

0

Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has told manager Arsene Wenger to sign a striker for the club as currently there is only two recognised forwards at the club in Giroud and Lukas Podolski.

The Gunners were meant to be busy this summer after it was revealed that they have up to £70million to spend this summer on new players and they were even able to compete financially with the big-time spenders, but as of yet, they have only signed Yaya Sanogo on a free transfer.

Arsene Wenger has been after the likes of Gonzalo Higuain, Wayne Rooney and Luis Suarez, but so far, he has failed in all three pursuits.

Giroud, who scored 17 goals in all competitions last season, scored during Arsenal’s 3-1 loss to Aston Villa on Saturday and in an interview he revealed that the club desperately need a striker to help the goal tally for this season.

‘In my opinion, it’s necessary for the club to recruit another striker.

‘Obviously, I think about it a little bit. It may change the play one day, especially if it’s a high profile signing.

‘It’s useless lamenting this though. I know what I have to do and what I’m capable of. I’m focusing on me and my work. The coach is counting on me, so I don’t think too much.’

Darren Ferguson knows Posh were lucky

0

Peterborough United manager Darren Ferguson admits that his side were lucky to pick up all three points on Saturday after they scraped a 2-1 victory against Oldham Athletic at London Road.

With the visitors in control of the game in the early stages, it was summer signing Britt Assombalonga that gave The Posh a surprise lead with a glorious 25-yard strike. That goal has taken his tally to three in three for the league.

The former-Watford signing was causing problems for Oldham again in the second half and when he was brought down by the away side’s goalkeeper, the referee had no choice but to award the hosts a penalty.

Wantaway striker Lee Tomlin took the ball and smashed it home to make it 2-0 to Ferguson’s men.

Despite a late rally from the visitors, Posh were able to hold on to the win but the manager knows they were lucky.

Ferguson said: “We have to count ourselves lucky to win that game.

“We had so many players who were miles below par and yet we still managed to come out on top.

“I’m delighted to be winning games as that is what this business is all about, but there is a lot of stuff that I am not happy with.

“We have not been anywhere near our best so far this season and we need to work out why that is the case.”

Jose Mourinho targets one more striker

0

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that he still wants to sign one more striker for the club this summer with his attentions still mainly focused on Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney.

The Blues have been admirers of Rooney all summer after the Englishman revealed that he wanted to leave Old Trafford, but David Moyes and United have made it clear that they are not willing to sell one of their star-assets.

However, this hasn’t put off The Special One, who saw his side ease to a 2-0 victory against Hull City yesterday, and despite having the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Demba Ba and Fernando Torres already at The Bridge, Mourinho is still keen on signing another striker.

“We will try till the last day to add a new player to the squad, a striker, but in this moment every striker has a club, every striker belongs to somebody and I don’t think it’s ethical that I name players that belong to other clubs,” Mourinho said following Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Hull City on Sunday.

“We don’t try, like many clubs do, to go around and try to influence players to behave in a certain way.

“If we have to make a bid, we make it in an official way, we don’t speak to players, we speak to clubs.”

Everton reject double bid from United

Reports out of all major outlets this morning claim Everton have rejected a £28million bid for Fellaini and Baines from Manchester United.

The pair have been heavily linked with a move to United for some time now, although a double bid was not expected.

It is believed that £16million was aimed at the Belgian midfielder Fellaini, whilst the remaining £12million was towards England full back Baines.

According to Liverpool Echo, the bid was snubbed almost instantaneously as Everton are unwilling to sell their prized assets.

Ancelotti bemoans poor defence

0

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti bemoaned his side’s defensive frailties despite the club emerging from its La Liga opener with a 2-1 win over Real Betis.

Madrid were forced to come from behind against Betis, new signing Isco emerging the hero after his 86th minute winner gave Ancelotti the perfect start to his new life in Spain.

But the Italian, who, just like his predecessor Jose Mourinho,  left Spanish captain Iker Casillas on the bench, was far from satisfied with the his squad’s performance at the back, admitting there could be change ahead of the club’s next game.

“We have to improve. We created chances to score but we had problems in defence,” explained the former PSG boss.

“Today I decided to choose Diego Lopez. I don’t know who is going to play in the next game.

“I have a great squad.  Morata,  Di Maria and Casemiro made the team stronger tonight [when they came of the bench].”

However, the former AC Milan boss saved praise for young Spain international Isco.

“Isco gave it all in this game,” stated the 54-year-old. “He scored a fantastic goal.”

Arsenal need to respond positively, admits Wenger

0

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has admitted that his side need to respond positively after he watched his side lose 3-1 at home to Aston Villa on Saturday during their Premier League opener.

Olivier Giroud gave the hosts an early lead, but two goals from Christian Benteke and a late Antonio Luna goal saw Paul Lambert’s men pick up all three points.

The Gunners won’t have too much time to be feeling down-beat as they have to travel to Turkey to face Fenerbache in their Champions League qualifier and Arsene Wenger knows that his players have to react positively.

“It is important not to let the mood drop – after such a disappointing start that will be the difficulty,” the manager said. “We will bounce back because the spirit and focus in the team is good, but I don’t deny that this is a massive disappointment for us.

“We missed chances, we were a bit unlucky and we got some injuries, all three together. It is a fragile position. There was bit of fatigue as well after [the midweek] international games and all that together created this [result].

“What is important is to rebuild confidence before Wednesday night. It is a massive game for us. There is always a lot of danger in a team because it is a human activity multiplied by 25 – it means the negativity can spread quickly.

“It is the first game of the season and we want to bounce back from it. Our season will depend on how we respond to this defeat.”

After Fenerbache, Arsenal then travel to Fulham on Saturday, before hosting Fenerbache in the second-leg and then facing Tottenham in the North London Derby at the Emirates Stadium.
