Compared to their previous rich lifestile the are poor and many with big debts. Althought some of the footballers have managed to clear their depts and are doing other things now. Not all footballers are not left homeless on the street with big debts. This means that not all are footballers who are now broke. Some of the footballers are still broke now.

5. John Arne Riise is one of the footballers who are broke

The former Liverpool left-back was a legend at Anfield. Riise had that famous left-footed shots that could break a goalkeepers hands. His powerful shooting and defending at Liverpool was not enough though.

Riise joined a number of lower-league teams after Liverpool including Fulham. John Arne Riise filed for bankruptcy in 2007 due to unpaid debt worth over £100,000. But you’d think he could afford it considering he was on wages of £50,000-a-week at Liverpool.

This was all due to a legal dispute involving his agent and a £3 million fraud case in Riise’s home in Norway. Riise was held liable for failing to pay off his debts for a failed business.

The Liverpool legend is now retired and it seems he must have cleared his debt.

4. David James MBE is one of the footballers who went broke

The former England and Portsmouth goalkeeper was a legend. He played in goal until the age of 41-years-old. David James is ranked fourth on the all-time appearances in the Premier League due to his playing until old age.David  James went broke after a messy divorce with his ex wife and filed for bankruptcy in 2014.

Despite earning over £20 million over his long-spanned career- James had serious debt to pay off.

But now, it seems all is well that ends well since he’s been appearing as a pundit on BT Sports. James also now manages Kerala Blasters in the Indian Super League.

3. Brad Friedel is one of the footballers who have gone broke

Brad Friedel spent a long time in the Premier League with various clubs.  The American Goalkeeper was on £40,000-a-week at Aston Villa but he still went bankrupt. Friedel had debts of over £5 million in 2011 i the United States.

The goalkeepers non-profit football academy had amassed a huge amount of debt.

Since then, Friedel has retired and been assistant coach of the US U20 team.

Friedel is now coach of  Major League Soccer team New England Revolution.

2. Paul Merson is one of the footballers who go broke

Paul Merson is a former Arsenal player who won the Premier League and the FA Cup with the Gunners. However, Merson almost ended up homeless without a penny on him.

The former Arsenal man had bad issues with alcohol and drug issues.  Merson reportedly spent over £3 million on his addictions. Not only that, Merson had a bad divorce and had to sell his house to clear the debts he had.

However, Merson seems to have got clean and cleared his debts. He is now appearing as a pundit for Sky Sports.

1. Paul Gascoigne is one of the footballers who went broke

The legendary English midfielder was one of the best. But, he also had severe alcohol addiction that plagued him after his illustrious football career. Having made his mark playing for Newcastle and Tottenham, Gascoigne struggled to deal with life after his career.

He dealt with mental health issues and alcohol dependence.  These issues caused Gascoigne to have debt of over £200,000. He has also been jailed for drink driving and was at his lowest point.

Gascoigne has been in and out of rehab but seems to be getting better as of 2018.
