An official statement on the official Sunderland website has confirmed that the club have terminated the contract of Adam Johnson with immediate effect.
The former Manchester City and Middlesbrough man recently pleaded guilty over a sexual offence charge and faces a trial.
The Black Cats have also confirmed that they will make no further comment on the matter.
