Chelsea and Liverpool both dealt blows

The defender has been linked with a move to Manchester United for quite some time, though Liverpool and Chelsea are also thought to be looking in.

Boss Louis Van Gaal has reportedly told right-back Rafael Da Silva that he is surplus to requirements at the club and will be replaced by Nathaniel Clyne should he sign in the summer.

Van Gaal has been forced to play winger Antonio Valencia in the right-back position for much of this season, and will be hoping he can sign a specialist in that position at the end of the campaign.

Right-back Wanted

The Dutchman has been looking at Barcelona’s Dani Alves but the Brazilian is expected to extend his stay at the Nou Camp.

This has lead United to step up their interest in the Saints man, who has previously said that he would love to play for one of the English giants.

A source close to Clyne said: “The player has made it known that United are his first choice, the deal is not done yet but it is a clear indication of his thinking.”

The England international has been impressive form this season, leading to his England call-up and the running for the Premier League team of the season.
