John Terry: facing this club at their home-ground was a nightmare 1

John Terry has revealed it was a “nightmare” playing Liverpool at Anfield

However, the Blues legend admits the Champions League semi-final of 2005 was the best atmosphere he has ever played in.

John played a prominent part of the Chelsea side that had a fierce rivalry with Liverpool in both domestic and European competition during the Rafael Benitez era.

Between the years 2005 and 2009, the two sides faced each other eight times in the Champions League as well as facing off in a League Cup final and an FA Cup semi-final.

And Terry says it was uncomfortable going to Anfield given the vociferous home support that has rarely been bettered than when Liverpool beat the Londoners 1-0 to reach the Champions League final in 2005.

“Going to Anfield was horrible,” said Terry, speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football.

“The atmosphere: you would drive from the hotel, a 30-minute bus ride and they were all on the streets, winding you up, throwing stuff at the bus.

“It was a nightmare. It was the worst and the best ground to go to. You didn’t fear going there.

“You look forward to going there, you look forward to the big games and big nights. The Champions League game in 2005 is probably the best atmosphere I’ve ever played in.”
