Manchester United have had a £27million offer for Valencia defender, Nicolas Otamendi, turned down, it’s been revealed.

The Red Devils are in the market for a new defensive figure with worries regarding players’ fitness levels and also their contributions to the first-team.

Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Johnny Evans have all come under questioning from pundits and fans alike, with Gary Neville saying they’ve gone backwards in recent seasons, and Louis Van Gaal is ready to mix things up by bringing in more new faces.

The Dutchman spent over £150m in the Summer to re-brand the United team, but he failed to sign enough defenders, and that is where he wants to improve this month as they look to bring back Champions League football to Old Trafford.

Reports in Spain have suggested that United have given up on signing Borussia Dortmund star Mats Hummels, and are now focusing on Otamendi, but have had a first offer turned down.

It’s believed that United offered £27m for the Argentine, who is also wanted by Arsenal.

The Gunners are also in the market for a new defender due to injury issues, and Otamendi is one name of their list.
