ALAN SMITH: Arsenal could do better with Diego Simeone

Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith believes that replacing current manager Arsene Wenger, in favour of bringing in Diego Simeone would rejuvenate the Gunners fortunes.

The North London outfit, who have struggled to keep up with league-leaders, Leicester City, and local rivals Tottenham Hotspur, are set for another trophy-less campaign, having failed to maintain their pursuit for a first Premier League crown since the 2003/04 invincible side.

Having finished either third or fourth in the table every year since May 2006,  some Arsenal fans have become restless at the lack of silverware, and are subsequently calling for long-standing manager, Arsene Wenger to leave.

Smith, who won two first division championships, an FA Cup and a League Cup at Highbury between 1987-1995, believes that a change is needed, and Atletico Madrid boss Simeone is the man to bring success back to North London’s Red half.

The now Sky Sports pundit said: “I don’t think the chemistry is right in terms of nastiness and leaders. I think you could get a better performance out there than what Wenger brings.”

‘For example Diego Simeone would make them harder to beat – he brings that steeliness.

‘There needs to be a change of attitude in how they approach games. They need to become better organised, more resilient but we say that every season.’
