Arsene Wenger is said to be keen to add another striker to his squad in the January transfer window and Gignac, aged 28, is one of his top targets, claims the Daily Express.

Pierre has been in the form of his career in the early stages of the new season.

His nine goals in nine league games so far this season, including an injury time winner in last night’s victory at Caen, make him to the leading goalscorer in Ligue 1 and have fired Marseille to the top of the table.

Gignac’s agent recently talked up a move to the Gunners or Premier League rivals Liverpool.

Christopher Hutteau told L’Equipe: “Given the fact that he is not very old, he has a real market value.

“This is a striker with a relatively atypical profile, responsive to the physical challenge, the archetypal player who can succeed at a big club.

“He can play in England, Arsenal or Liverpool , no problem. For me, it is between €12 million (£9.5m) and €15 million (£11m).”

Gignac is out of contract at the end of the season, so Wenger is hoping to make a cut-price bid for him in the new year.
