Arsene Wenger confirms desire to stick with current back-line

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has all-but ended his interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels by confirming he’s happy with his current options at the back.

The Gunners have been long-term admirers of the German centre-back, and were prepared to enter a transfer tug-of-war with rivals Manchester United over the Summer.

However, in his recent press conference, Wenger revealed that he has no plans on strengthening his back-line as he is already content with the options he has.

Paulista Signing and Depth

Arsenal signed Gabriel Paulista in January from Villarreal in a deal worth around ÂŁ11million, and Wenger believes he already has enough depth at the back ahead of next season.

“Four is enough,” Wenger said of his defensive core. “Debuchy can play there, Monreal can play there, so you can say we are not out to buy a central defender.

He then added: “Gabriel will be a great central defender, believe me.”

Arsenal’s current options at centre-back are; Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Paulista, but Wenger predicted Calum Chambers to emerge as a centre-back rather than a right-back next season.

Predicted Activity

Wenger is believed to be active in the Summer market once the season ends as he hopes to close the gap on his side to league-winners Chelsea.

It’s believed a centre-midfielder is high on Wenger’s wishlist, with Morgan Schneiderlin heavily linked, and also a new goalkeeper, with Petr Cech on top of his list.
