The Gunners have reportedly made Napoli an offer

Arsenal have renewed their interest in Napoli striker Gonzalo Higuain after reports emerged that a £29.4million offer had been lodged by the Premier League side.

The Gunners were interested in the Argentinian star back in the Summer of 2013, but after turning their attentions to Liverpool‘s Luis Suarez, they fell behind in the race for Higuain and he eventually chose to join Serie A side Napoli.

Arsenal were very close to agreeing a deal with Real Madrid two years ago, but Arsene Wenger‘s decision to switch targets prevented the deal from going through.

Higuain at Napoli

Higuain has gone on to make 69 Serie A appearances for Napoli, scoring 35 goals, but after Rafael Benitez‘s departure from the club this Summer, a mass of players may follow suit.

Benitez left in order to take over from Carlo Ancelotti at Real Madrid, and it’s believed several star players could look to leave as well.

According to reports, Higuain is ready to leave Italy and Napoli after they failed to finish in a Champions League spot for next season. The Italian side finished fifth in Serie A after losing a final-day game with Lazio, which could have secured them a European spot.

Napoli went into the game knowing they had to win, and with the scores at 2-2 and Lazio down to 10-men, Higuain missed a penalty and they eventually went on to lose the game 4-2.

Asking-Price and Potential Contract

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Napoli are holding out for at least £36.8m for the star-striker, which is £7.4m more than what Arsenal are prepared to offer.

It’s also believed that if the two clubs can strike a deal, Arsenal will offer Higuain £84k-a-week.

Striking Options at Emirates

Wenger is reportedly interested in adding another striker to his squad, in order to take the pressure off Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck, who are the only two recognised strikers at the club as it stands.

However, after his exploits against West Brom and in the FA Cup Final, Theo Walcott could be deemed a suitable option in the future.
