Arsenal are ready to make a formal bid of around £12million for Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin, but may face competition from rivals Liverpool.

The Premier League giants are both keen on adding strength and depth to their squads ahead of next season, and they are both in the market for a holding-midfielder, with Liverpool set to sell current-option Lucas Leiva, and Arsene Wenger ready to replace veteran Mikel Arteta.

Schneiderlin has been one of the stand-out players for Southampton since their return to the Premier League, and was close to moving to the Emirates Stadium in January, but The Saints’ asking price was too high and the potential deal collapsed.

However, Wenger is ready to renew his interest in the Frenchman this Summer and is willing to pay £12m for the 24-year-old, but may have to see of Liverpool, who are interested in THREE Saints players.

Schneiderlin, Adam Lallana and Dejan Lovren are all being monitored by Rodgers and they are prepared to spend £20m on Lallana and £8m on Lovren.

In a recent interview, the French midfielder admitted that a move away this Summer would be tempting, especially if Champions League football is involved.

He revealed: “For my progress and my visibility, it would be better to play for a club who play in the Champions League.

“I know there is a lot of speculation, but I still have three years on my contract, it does not depend on me.

“We’ll see in the coming weeks.”
