Arsenal’s Flashy Target Now Wanted By Newcastle United And Wolves

Gelson Martins seems to be at the centre of transfer talks this week as latest reports claim Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers have joined in on the race to sign the Atletico Madrid winger this month.

The 23-year-old has drawn strong links with Arsenal who want to sign him on loan for the remainder of the season. With Unai Emery already facing competition from Thierry Henry’s AS Monaco, the final weeks of the January transfer window are bound to get even more interesting with Newcastle and Wolves joining in on the loan race.

Martins only moved to the Wanda Metropolitana last summer from Sporting Lisbon but has struggled to establish himself as prime attacking figure under Diego Simeone. Atletico are expected to sign Alvaro Morata from Chelsea by the end of this month which could pave the way for the winger’s short term exit.

Arsenal have shot themselves in the foot by announcing their strategies for this particular transfer window. Emery openly stated earlier that permanent transfers are not possible due to the lack of funds and this has allowed rival outfits to take advantage in trade dealings.

The Gunners desperately need a winger to stretch their attacks now that Mesut Ozil has fallen out of favour with Emery. The German does not necessarily perform to his best from the wide positions and neither does Henrikh Mkhitaryan or Aaron Ramsey.

With the Suarez deal supposedly fallen off the table, Emery should strongly pursue Martins’ services. Wolves are heavily stacked in the wing department after signing Adama Traore last summer from Middlesbrough and Newcastle have their own financial issues which circle around the Mike Ashley ownership.
