Joel Campbell was the centre of much speculation in the summer, with reports suggesting that the Costa Rican nearly moved to Portuguese outfit Benfica during the transfer window. But depsite the rumours and even requesting a move away from The Emirates, Campbell ended up staying put at Arsenal.

Manager Arsene Wenger soon became under fire from the 22-year-old’s agent after signing England striker Danny Welbeck for ÂŁ16 million from Manchester United. The player’s agent has also revealed that Serie A giants AC Milan made an enquiry for the youngster, but said Fiorentina were the only club to make a formal offer.

“I received many phone calls from Italy,” Campbell’s agent Joaquim Bata told Canale Fgm.

“Joel really likes Milan and Roma, so he wanted a call from either of those two clubs. There was contact with the Rossoneri, while the Giallorossi thought of him as an alternative to Destro in case of a sale.”

“The only club that really made an offer in Italy was Fiorentina, even if at the end of the day they didn’t agree terms.”

Campbell spent the whole of last season on loan at Olympiacos, scoring 8 goals.
