Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed that he is open to offering club-captain Thomas Vermaelen a new contract at the club, despite him falling out of favour at the Emirates Stadium.

The Belgium centre-back, who was dropped at the end of last season due to poor-form, has struggled to win his spot back in the starting XI due to the impressive partnership brewing between Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

However, speaking to the club’s official website, Wenger admitted that he would be open to offering the defender a contract extension at the club.

“I am open to it,” the manager said. “I am ready to extend his contract. We want Thomas Vermaelen to be happy and have the number of games a player of his class deserves.

“On my side, I have a high respect for his qualities and attitude and I am ready to extend his contract.

“At the moment we’re all on board for something this season that is respectable. At the end of the season I can sit down with Thomas and see what he thinks about it.”

Wenger also gave the latest on Per Mertesacker, Bacary Sagna and Tomas Rosicky, who are all in talks with the club over new deals.

“That [the new contracts] is very, very, very close,” he said. “Not for all of them but for most of them.
