R’s striker edges closer to joining the Magpies

Newcastle United are reportedly close to securing the services of QPR striker Charlie Austin as the bookies have suspended any bets on him departing London for Tyneside.

The 26 year old has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle as new manager Steve McClaren looks to bolster his attacking options which only managed to notch 40 goals last season, which proved just enough to secure another stay in the top flight.

It is evident the Magpies boss wants no repeat of last season and believes the young England forward is the man to ensure that.

Odds Slashed

According to Paddypower, the striker was 11/8 on moving to Tyneside this summer, however this was then slashed to 1/9 after a surge of bets was placed on 26 year old swapping Loftus Road for St James Park.

Austin scored 18 Premier League goals season which was not enough to save QPR from relegation to the Championship. However it appears Newcastle are very close to giving Austin a return to the top flight.

It is suggested United will pay ÂŁ15 million for the striker, who will be their second signing of the summer after they signed PSV Eindhoven midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum last week.
