Manchester City star admits he shouldn’t have played against Liverpool

Manchester City defender Bacary Sagna has admitted he shouldn’t have played against Liverpool on Saturday following the Paris Attacks.

The Frenchman was on the end of a 4-1 hammering as Jurgen Klopp‘s men stormed to all three points at the Eithad Stadium this weekend.

Sagna and centre-back Eliaquim Mangala were both in the France squad during the Paris Attacks last Friday, and they both suffered from shocking displays on Saturday, with Mangala scoring an own-goal after just seven minutes.

Speaking after the game, Sagna admitted he wasn’t physically or mentally ready to play against Liverpool and he probably shouldn’t have been playing.

He said: “It was not easy to be part of that event [Paris]. I was feeling down and it was quite difficult to play. Personally, it’s not been my best week.

“Mentally and physically I believed I was ok to play. But I wasn’t. I tired quite quickly and didn’t have as much power as I usually do.”

Sagna was at fault for the Mangala own-goal after losing the ball, and he admitted that he felt guilty.

He added: “I felt guilty [about the goal]. I should have kept my head up but I was too upset. I was thinking about what happened and I shouldn’t have.

“I don’t want to blame the team or the defensive changes we made. I look at myself first and I was bad.”
