Bayern Munich are in total crisis mode after both Lucas Hernandez and Nikolas Sule went down to injuries this past week.
They are scampering for depth in the centre-back position, one of their options being a quick bid for Athletic Bilbao’s Unai Nunez.
Niko Kovac currently only has Benjamin Pavard and the injury-prone, Jerome Boateng to play in the heart of the defence. If either of them were to go down, Javi Martinez and David Alaba are expected to be played out of position or Bayern will have to promote 19-year-old Lukas May.
Nunez not only attracted the attention of a lot of top European sides but also that of Spain boss, Roberto Moreno. After performing brilliantly in Bilbao’s opening day 1-0 win over Barcelona, the 22-year-old earned his first senior cap for his country. However, for some reason or the other, Nunez has been frozen out of the Bilbao first team and has mostly been riding the bench ever since his start to the season.
Arsenal were reported to be interested in the defender but Bayern have a more immediate need to sign him. The Allianz Arena also looks like a more lucrative offer for Nunez since the Bavarians are playing Champions League football and are leading the Bundesliga whereas Unai Emery’s side are struggling to keep up in the Premier League top-four race.
