Pep Guardiola Promises Phil Foden More Playing Time 'One Day'

Pep Guardiola has assured Phil Foden and the Manchester City fans that the youngster will receive game time “one day”.

The 19-year-old is regarded as one of the best youth prospects in England and he is yet to break into the City rotation under Guardiola. He has made only 5 appearances this season, 2 of which were as an injury-time substitute.

Foden has stared for England at U21 level and has been impressive whenever given the chance to showcase his talents. He scored and assisted in the 2-0 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb earlier this month. With David Silva in his final season at the Etihad, it was understood that Foden would be eased into the Spaniard’s spot as his natural successor but so far, that has not been the case.

Guardiola has admitted to often apologising to both his strikers, Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero for benching them in place of the other. The City boss is confident that Foden is developing at an optimum rate and he could feature more heavily in the future.

“All the guys say the same, all of them,” he said. “They all suggest they should play more. I understand it and they are right. For Phil, between the ages of 19 and 23, every season he will get better. The quality is there. He is a fighter and has an incredible work ethic. One day he will get it.”
