The player has struggled for regular game time this season
Mario Gotze was on top of the world when he fired Germany to World Cup glory in Brazil in 2014 with a dramatic extra-time winner against Argentina. But he has endured a difficult four years since then.
The rest of his time at Bayern Munich didn’t went well as he struggled for regular game time and failed to make impact. He returned back to his former club Borussia Dortmund in 2016 in order to get more first team football.
The Germany International showed glimpses of his talent last season, scoring 2 goals and assisting 6 in 32 games. But still didn’t went the way he was hoping for and even missed a place in the Germany World Cup squad.
The 26 year old was linked with an exit before the transfer deadline as it was suggested he was looking to kickstart his career. He reportedly wanted to move to Premier League and was linked with Arsenal and Liverpool.
The midfielder has struggled to regain his place at Dortmund due to competition for places in Lucien Favre’s team and is yet to feature in the Bundesliga so far this season. His first start this term only came in Tuesday’s 1-0 victory over Bruges in the Champions League.
The player was even urged by Germany legend Lothar Matthaus to leave the club in order to restart his career and even claimed that he lacks the quality to get a place in the starting XI.
However, Gotze has revealed that his aim is to start on a regular basis for the Bundesliga giants this season.
“My desire is always to play, and that will never change, I’ve experienced too much and had too much success,” the former Bayern Munich man said after the late victory in Belgium.
“Of course I didn’t play my best game, but I’ve got confidence in myself that will always be there,” he asserted.
