Ramon Calderon believes Messi leaving Barcelona is bad for football in Spain and for Real Madrid.

The Catalan giants were shaken by Lionel Messi’s transfer request last week and a decision on the player’s future is yet to be made.

Messi in all probability will be leaving Barcelona after spending over two decades and former Madrid president Ramon Calderon is scared of how it will impact football in Spain.

“It is important to have a team like Barcelona in our league, and for Real Madrid as well to have as a rival,” he told Stats Perform News. “It makes both teams better.

“It used to happen with Cristiano [Ronaldo] and [Lionel] Messi. The fact that both have been in those teams made them better players.

“It encouraged them to improve themselves and win more trophies in order to beat the other. It is the same with Real Madrid and Barcelona.

“The clubs are always in a competition. This is what should happen between those two clubs.”

The El Clasico rivalries have always been a thing of great significance and it rose to the highest world prominence over the last decade due to the competition between CR7 of Madrid and Messi from Barcelona.

However, that is now set to be a thing of the past.
