Arsenal defender saw loan move blocked by Arsene Wenger

Arsenal centre-back Calum Chambers asked the club if he could leave on a short-term loan deal, only to be told no by Arsene Wenger.

The young defender arrived at the Emirates Stadium last summer when the club agreed to pay Southampton ÂŁ16million.

Despite starting several games early on in his Gunners career, Chambers then ‘hit the wall’ according to Wenger and was then dropped to the back of the line in order to prevent burn-out.

Chambers First-Team Opportunities

Chambers was featuring regularly due to injury issues at the back, but the emergence of Hector Bellerin and the signing of Gabriel Paulista in January lifted the pressure off the 20-year-old.

According to reports, Chambers was then keen on going out on loan in order to play regular first-team football, but Wenger denied him the opportunity.

Wenger believes the youngster can learn a lot by training alongside Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny, and that’s why he didn’t want to loan him out.

Old-club Southampton were keen over the summer on a season-long loan deal, but Arsenal rejected their approach.
