Chelsea’s move to secure future with Ian Maatsen contract extension
Despite his recent struggles for playing time, Chelsea seems ready to issue an extension offer to 21-year-old prodigy Ian Maatsen. According to club sources, the Blues are keen to secure the Dutch Under-21 international’s long-term future.
Maatsen, who impressed during a loan spell at Burnley last season, turned down a permanent move to Turf Moor on deadline day, instead choosing to compete for a place in Chelsea’s first squad. However, the young player has had few opportunities this season, making only two starts in nine matches.
Chelsea’s commitment to protecting Maatsen as a valued asset is reflected in the extension of his current contract until June 2025. The club is now seemingly considering to offer him a longer deal, revealing their belief in his abilities.
Despite his recent lack of playing time, Maatsen showed versatility and quality throughout pre-season, attracting manager Mauricio Pochettino’s attention with performances in a wide range of positions. Maatsen has heavy competition from the likes of Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling, as well as the return of Marc Cucurella.
The impending contract offer might be an important turning point for the young phenom, who has indicated that he will keep his options open if first-team appearances remain limited.
