Chelsea is apparently moving their focus away from the highly desirable Ivan Toney and towards Brighton’s emerging star, Evan Ferguson. According to journalist David Ornstein, the Blues are keeping a close eye on the 19-year-old striker as a potential solution to their goal-scoring problems.

Ferguson’s outstanding performance this season, including an incredible hat-trick, has caught the interest of Chelsea’s decision-makers. The club, which is normally linked with big-money signings, seems to be experimenting with different transfer strategies.

He said: “If Ivan Toney isn’t currently among the top few on Chelsea’s list — which you saw I’ve reported — it’s hard not to think Osimhen probably is.

“I must stress I don’t know that to be the case, though. The potential cost of trying to sign him from Napoli (let alone the possibility they don’t qualify for next season’s Champions League) may complicate a potential pursuit for Chelsea and others. But he is in this bracket of strikers being looked at by all the top clubs.

“The likes of (Lautaro) Martinez, Sesko, Ferguson and Boniface get mentioned to me a lot by people who work in recruitment. Right now the demand continues to outstrip the supply.”

While many expected Chelsea to look into Toney in order to improve their offensive options, Ornstein’s opinion adds an unexpected twist to the story. Given their recent transfer issue with Brighton during the pursuit of Moises Caicedo, it remains to be seen whether the Blues will try to negotiate with the club.

As the January transfer window approaches, Chelsea fans are waiting to see if Evan Ferguson can emerge as the solution to the club’s goal-scoring troubles.
