Chelsea star ‘declined England call-up’
Chelsea star Danny Drinkwater declined a call-up to the latest England squad, Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate confirmed on Thursday.
Drinkwater was contacted by the FA after six players pulled out of the squad for upcoming friendlies against Germany and Brazil, but turned down the offer.
Southgate made the revelation in his press conference on Thursday, after journalists quizzed him regarding England’s current selection crisis.
“I spoke to Danny earlier in the week but he feels he is not fit enough to play,” said Southgate. “I’m not a manager who wants to reel players out until they break. I don’t take risks with players.”

Drinkwater recently returned after six weeks out with a thigh injury, and is keen to build up fitness and impress manager Antonio Conte following his summer move from Leicester City.
Chelsea fans will be relieved after Ngolo Kante tore a hamstring whilst on duty with France last month, and Alvaro Morata sustained a bizarre injury with the Spain team this week.
