Chelsea step up interest in Real Madrid defender

Chelsea could step up their interest in Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, after they were rejected by Atletico Madrid centre-back, Miranda.

Jose Mourinho was keen to sign a third Madrid player this Summer, after already securing Diego Costa and Filipe Luis, but he was told by the defender that he had no plans on leaving the club, unlike his former team-mates.

It was reported that Chelsea made a formal ÂŁ20million bid for Miranda, who was also wanted by Manchester United and FC Barcelona, but the trio were rejected by Miranda, who revealed his plans to sign a new deal.

With Miranda refusing to move, Mourinho is set to turn his attentions back to Varane, who is highly-rated during his time at the Bernabeu as the Madrid manager, and the Portuguese manager was the man that signed Varane for the Spanish side.

The Frenchman has demanded contract talks with the officials at Madrid, and he is ready to quit if he’s not promised regular first-team football, which could pave the way for a Mourinho-Varane reunion at Stamford Bridge.
