Chelsea to try and snatch Manchester United target

Chelsea are weighing up a shock swoop for Barcelona star Gerard Pique, and are considering rivalling Manchester United for the player’s signature.

Pique joined United from Barca before eventually returning to the Catalan club. Current United boss Louis van Gaal is in the market for some defensive reinforcements and Pique was believed to be his main target, with the Spaniard finding himself out of favour at Barcelona this season.

But now Jose Mourinho has joined the race for the centre back, and is willing to match United’s offer to get his man. Chelsea are not as desperate for new defenders in January as United, but see Pique as a potential long term replacement for the ageing John Terry.

And FIFA agent Francois Gallardo believes that the player could indeed be moving to England. “The player is angry and Barca are open to his departure.”

“He could end up at either Manchester United or Chelsea.”

Only time will tell if Mourinho can beat his former mentor van Gaal to Pique’s signature.
