Comolli: Jordan Henderson got me the sack

Ex-Liverpool Director of Football Damian Comolli has claimed that the club’s £20M signing Jordan Henderson cost him his job.

Comolli, who left in 2012, reckons that the Fenway Sports Group, who own the Anfield club, thought the midfielder was not good enough.

Henderson, after initially struggling after arriving from Sunderland, has gone on to make an impact for the club, and for the England national side.

“When we signed Jordan Henderson, he got so much criticism, I got so much criticism,” he told the Dublin Web Summit.

“I was never told why I was sacked but I was led to believe it was because we signed Jordan Henderson, and the owners were convinced he was not good enough.”

Comolli also reckons that Liverpool also lost one of their biggest leaders in Luis Suarez, though Henderson has stepped up to become vice-captain.

He added: “We have seen the difference between Liverpool last year and this year so it shows how good a technical leader he is, how creative he is at what he does,” he said.

“He is also a spiritual leader because he is so enthusiastic and his work-rate is so phenomenal, he drags the whole team behind him.”
