Following an impressive run of form during pre season, Jose Mourinho has given Thibault Courtois the opportunity to prove himself in the Premier League by making him Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper ahead of Petr Cech.
Chelsea have also told Petr Cech that after a decade at Stamford Bridge, he is free to leave, with Monaco, Real Madrid and PSG monitoring the situation of the 32 year old.
The Czech’s agent, Viktor Kolar, has already confirmed that he will speak to the big teams around Europe about their interest in Cech if there ever came a time that the Czech was no longer needed in West London.
“I would get in touch with Andoni Zubizarreta at Barcelona and people at Real Madrid,” he told the press six weeks ago.
“These are clubs we would consider if Chelsea wanted to get rid of Petr.
“We would also consider Bayern Munich but they have Neuer there. Then there are leagues Petr would not go to – Serie A, for instance, because clubs in that league have problems.
“Paris Saint-Germain have shown interest and we have also communicated with Monaco.”
Courtois has been named La Liga’s best goalkeeper in the past 2 seasons at Atletico Madrid, and also played a significant role in Atletico Madrid’s road to the Champions League final in Lisbon last season, which also included knocking Chelsea out at the semi-final stage at Stamford Bridge.
Jose Mourinho’s decision to choose Courtois over Cech shows a willingness to improve his Chelsea team, that narrowly missed out on bringing in silverware in his first season back in charge of the Blues.
Since joining Chelsea from Rennes in 2004 for £7,000,000, Cech has made 479 appearances for Chelsea and has won the Champions League, the Europa League, three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and three League Cups.
Chelsea will negotiate any offers for Petr Cech that stand around the £10,000,000 region.
