Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City have tied down the services of skipper Vincent Kompany until 2019.

The defender, 28, is the fourth player to commit his future to the club ahead of the start of the defence of their title, alongside Aleksanar Kolarov, David Silva and Samir Nasri.

Kompany has been a rock at the heart of the City defence since arriving from Hamburg in 2008, with two Premier League title victories.

In a statement on City’s official website, Kompany said “When I arrived here, I could never have dreamed what we have achieved,  but this is just the start of the journey.

“This team is stronger now than it’s ever been. We have a dressing room full of exceptional, motivated people who want to continue making history together.

“We have a common goal and so much to look forward to – a family of clubs, the City Football Academy. Why would I go anywhere else?”

City start their defence against Newcastle on Sunday.
