La Liga side may wait until next summer to land the goalkeeper for free

Real Madrid could potentially wait a year before they sign Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea, after considering a payment of €5m to convince him to reject any proposed new deal at Old Trafford.

According to Marca, Madrid will agree to pay De Gea €5m (£3.47m) in order to prevent him from remaining at United, and leave on a free-transfer to the Spanish capital next summer.

The 24-year-old has one-year remaining on his current deal at Manchester United, with talks over a new contract extension at the club put on hold for now, given the interest from the Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid view a delayed signing of De Gea until next year as an alternative to shelling out a considerable amount for him.

A Real dilemma

Should De Gea decide to see out his contract at Manchester United next season, therefore delaying his departure a season, then Real Madrid could be faced with a dilemma in the goalkeeping department.

The shot-stopper, who helped the Red Devils back into the top four, winning the Club’s Player of the Year in the process, was seen of Iker Casillas‘ long-term successor, with the Los Blancos stalwart leaving the club for Porto after more than a decade.

Costa Rican keeper Keylor Navas is expected to start next season as Madrid’s number one choice, however Marca also claim that Espanyol goalkeeper Kiko Casilla has agreed to return to Real, in a €6m deal.

Casilla departed Madrid in 2007 – however the 28-year-old is in line for a return to his form haunt, a club of whom he was part of the academy setup.
