The Premier League champions’ disappointing season took its most painful twist yesterday as Moyes’ men were ripped apart by fierce rivals Liverpool.

Wayne Rooney described the 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford as one of his worst days in football and the result has only increased the question marks over Moyes’ suitability at filling Ferguson’s shoes.

The dejected United boss admitted afterwards that following in the footsteps of the legendary Scot has proved even harder than he had envisaged.

‘The job was always going to be hard,’ he said. ‘Harder [than I thought]? Yes I would say so yes.’

So far the United fans have stuck by Moyes loyally but the former Everton manager is realistic enough to know that won’t continue for ever.

‘Results will always dictate that but I can only tell you what I’ve seen today and the supporters were terrific,’ he said.
