David De Gea is set to stun Manchester United fans by turning down a new contract and returning to Spain.

According to reports, the goalkeeper, who has had a decent so far despite United underperforming at the back, could join Real Madrid as a replacement for Iker Casillas.

United are desperate not to sell to Madrid but fear that the Spanish giants will not take no for an answer.

De Gea, 24, joined United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, and this year made his debut for the Spanish national side.

He had a fantastic season last term, winning the Match of the Day Save of the Season award for a brilliant stop against Luis Suarez, then of Liverpool.

If the move to Real materialises, then he could find himself lining up against Suarez once again, after the striker joined fierce rivals Barcelona.

United fans will not want to lose the keeper, as the club have struggled for a regular top class keeper since losing Peter Schmeichel and Edwin Van der Sar in previous years.
