French star announced his decision before the World Cup started
Since joining Atletico Madrid from Real Sociedad back in 2014, Antoine Griezmann has been a mainstay in the team. He has given numerous impressive performances and has established himself as one of the best strikers in the World.
The 27 year old was a regular for La Liga giants last season, scoring 29 goals in all competitions. He helped his team to finish 2nd in the La Liga behind Barcelona and inspired them to win the Europa League last month.
Despite being contracted with the Spanish side until the summer of 2022, the France International was heavily linked with an exit from the club. He was tipped with a move to rivals Barcelona in the past couple of weeks with reports claiming that they are ready to pay his £88 million release clause.
The Forward kept a tight silence on the subject throughout France’s World Cup preparations but confirmed that he will make an announcement about his future by the end of this week, before the World Cup starts.
He finally buried the speculations over his future with the news that he will remain at the Wanda Metropolitano, revealing his decision in a lavish video documentary.
Diego Costa expressed his desire earlier that he wants his teammate to stay the club beyond this summer and now has claimed that he always knew that the Frenchman will stay. He is delighted to have the club’s star on board once again.
“I haven’t seen the documentary, but I knew what was the end. When it takes so long to make a decision it’s because he was going to stay,” he told Onda Cero as quoted by Goal.
“I knew that he identified very much with the fans, with the people, with us. I was delighted,” he continued before aiming a jibe at his French friend.
“The b*stard will have received good money.”
