The former Blues’ boss could return to England

Former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo has emerged as the favourite to take over Aston Villa ahead of the 2016/17 season.

Villa were relegated to the Championship after finishing rock bottom of the Premier League, and they are looking at Di Matteo to replace Remi Garde who was sacked by the West Midlands club.

Di Matteo is currently out of work after he left Schalke following a poor Bundesliga campaign, but he held talks with Villa chairman Steve Hollis yesterday.

The 45-year old won the Champions League when he was the Chelsea chief and he is looking to raid the Blues in order to bring in Eddie Newton as his assistant at Villa.

Di Matteo has previously managed in the Championship during the 2009-2010 season; he guided Villa’s rivals West Bromwich Albion to second place and automatic promotion to England’s top flight.
