Pep Guardiola claims the pressure is on Manchester City, not Liverpool

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola claims that the pressure is on his team, rather than with Liverpool. The Spaniard said this despite the Cityzens brushed aside Arsenal and closed the gap up top to only two points.

The Reds will play their game in hand tomorrow night away at West Ham United, which could prove to be a tricky game in all aspects. City slipped up in midweek to lose to Newcastle, but Jurgen Klopp’s men didn’t make use of that chance and only managed to draw against Leicester. Hence, the title race gets intense week after week, with Tottenham also having a say in it.

But, Guardiola says that the pressure is still on his side.

Speaking after the win against Arsenal, he said: “I prefer to be in Liverpool’s position rather than where we are. The pressure is when you’re behind. If you lose points, it’s tougher. When you’re top with distance you can lose points and still be there.

“Of course we have to win a lot of games. After the Newcastle defeat everyone thought we would go seven points behind. But everyone expected Liverpool would win against Leicester.

“A lot of things are going to happen between now and the end of the season. It will be tough. But football is unpredictable. Now we are two, tomorrow it can be three, five again.

“I’m not in the mind of Jurgen and the players. Every press conference you say, ‘Put pressure on Liverpool’. I don’t know. We have to be ourselves. That’s the main target we want to achieve, and win our games.

“I cannot deny that we’d prefer West Ham beat Liverpool, of course. But Liverpool would have preferred Arsenal beat us. That is normal. But I don’t have influence on that.”

Manchester City have a quick turnover as the Everton game away at Goodison Park is around the corner on Wednesday, before Chelsea visit the Etihad at the weekend.
