Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has told Red Devils fans to believe in Jose Mourinho to turn things around at Old Trafford.

United, and Mourinho in particular, were humiliated yesterday as Chelsea, Jose’s former employers, cruised to an emphatic 4-0 victory.

This latest setback meant United have now picked up only five points in their last six Premier League games.

Next up for Mourinho’s men is a EFL Cup clash with neighbours Manchester City on Wednesday, with Mourinho under ever-increasing pressure.

Neville, however, is refusing to panic, and is urging United fans to trust the Portuguese manager to get things right.

“There will be a massive over-reaction to that game,” Neville said on his Sky Sports podcast following the loss to Chelsea. “Jose Mourinho will come under pressure. It will all be ramped up again with the derby on Wednesday.

“I’m quite relaxed, if I’m honest with you.

“When you are a Manchester United fan, in 30 years, 50 years, you are going to have difficult times and you have to accept them when they come along and be mature about it.

“They have a fantastic manager who has been proven in all of the top leagues in Europe and they need to allow him to do his job methodically over the next two to three years to get it right.

“I think at the moment, Manchester United fans should relax as it is just part of the 50, 60, 70 years of being a fan. It is not always going to be rosy.”
