Everton and Wayne Rooney could be heading for an emotional reunion, with the Manchester United star ready to turn down West Ham United.

It has been a tough season for Rooney, who is no longer first choice at either club or international level, despite being leading scorer for both United and England.

The Hammers were reportedly among a host of clubs, both at home and abroad, interested in signing Rooney.

However, the Independent insist the Toffees are the Manchester United legend’s preferred destination – with a source saying the move was “likely to happen”.

One potential stumbling block, despite the possibility that United could waive any transfer fee, could be wages. Rooney’s current deal at Old Trafford is worth ÂŁ300,000 per week. Everton may only be able to afford half of what he currently earns.

Everton could use Romelu Lukaku as a potential makeweight in any deal for Rooney, with United in the market for a striker to help ease the pressure on Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Marcus Rashford.

As for West Ham, they are reportedly turning their attentions to Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson, who they wanted to sign in January to replace Marseille-bound Dimitri Payet.
