England manager Gareth Southgate has named Chelsea defender Gary Cahill as the Three Lions captain for tomorrow’s friendly with Germany in Dortmund.

Cahill, 31, wore the armband when England beat Germany 3-2 in Berlin last year.

He has been praised by Southgate for his growing maturity in the heart of the Chelsea defence, with Antonio Conte’s side closing in on the Premier League title.

Southgate said: ‘He’s in very good form. One of the players in the squad who knows what’s needed to win. This season he has grown in stature in the way he’s playing.

‘There’s real composure in his play. His experience is overlooked sometimes in what he brings to the squad. He goes quietly about his job. It’s great for him to be able to captain the side tomorrow.’

Cahill is promoted from vice-captain, with Wayne Rooney stripped of the captaincy. Rooney was not named in the squad for the games against Germany and Lithuania.

Cahill revealed his pride at being asked to don the armband. He said: “It’s a huge honour every time you play for England never mind captain the country.”

He will not be leading England out against Lithuania at Wembley however, as he is suspended for the World Cup Qualifier.
