Free agent Llorente finally found a new club months on from Tottenham exit.
Napoli have signed Fernando Llorente on a free transfer after the Spaniard’s two-year spell at Tottenham came to an end, the Serie A club announced.
The 34-year-old striker had been without a club since his contract at Spurs expired in June and he opted to return to Italy by signing for Serie A outfit Napoli despite Tottenham’s desire to sign him to a new contract.
“Napoli are delighted to announce the signing of Spanish forward Fernando Llorente. The striker was a free agent after being released by Tottenham Hotspur at the end of last season”, a statement at Napoli’s official website read.
Llorente has put pen to paper on a two-year contract with Napoli and will provide experienced backup in attack.
“I am very happy to start this new adventure with the Napoli team. Surely great moments are waiting for us to live together. I will do my best to achieve many important goals. I thank the fans for the affection you have shown me”, he told Sky Italy.
The 24-time Spain international, who won the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship with his country, had previously been linked with Manchester United, Saint-Etienne and Fiorentina during the summer, along with a potential return to White Hart Lane. Last season, he scored a controversial goal to help Spurs beat Manchester City on away goals in the Champions League quarter-finals.
The veteran striker returns to Serie A after a two-season spell with Juve between 2013 and 2015, scoring 27 goals and winning two Italian league trophies.
