Chelsea target Irishman as first January transfer

Chelsea are in advanced talks with Everton to bring defender Seamus Coleman to Stamford Bridge in January.

The 27-year-old Republic of Ireland right-back is strongly being linked with the struggling Blues, as Jose Mourinho looks to bolster his options with Branislav Ivanovic struggling at the back for the Blues.

It is understood Everton are already looking for their replacement, with Coleman to be Chelsea’s first January signing when the transfer window opens.

Coleman transfer questionable

Despite numerous valid sources claiming a move for Coleman is close, there are question marks regarding Everton’s stance over the sale of England defender John Stones, who the Toffees refused to sell to Chelsea over the summer.

Coleman is a valuable and quality member of Everton’s backline and Roberto Martinez will be reluctant to sell such a key player with Everton closing in on a European place.

Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United have all been linked with the Irishman in the past year and now seems an odd time for Coleman to join Chelsea.

The Blues are currently a point off the relegation zone in 16th, and their form is showing no signs of changing while Everton could provide the Republic of Ireland international with European football next campaign. Something that seems very much unlikely Chelsea will be able to provide.
