Ex-captain speaks out about Hodgson sacking

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has admitted he was ‘gutted’ with the clubs decision to sack Roy Hodgson so soon.

Hodgson arrived shortly after Liverpool parted ways with former manager Rafa Benitez in the summer of 2010, but he lasted less than half a season in the job.

Gerrard has conceded that it possibly wasn’t the best time for Hodgson to arrive, but that wasn’t enough to stop him from being replaced with Kenny Dalglish in January 2011, with Liverpool stuck in mid-table.

“I was gutted when he left Liverpool,” Gerrard told BT Sport.

“I thought the timing of him taking the Liverpool job was probably wrong because a lot of the fans wanted Dalglish in and Dalglish is the king at Liverpool.

“I thought Roy paid the price for that, coming in before Kenny.

“I think if it had been reversed and if he came in after him, he maybe would have got a bit more time and the fans would have had a bit more respect for him.

“He’s certainly a top coach, a good person and someone who works very hard to make sure his teams are hard to beat, so I’ve got a lot of respect for him.”
