Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal will receive £10million if the club decide to sack him while Champions League qualification is still possible.

The Dutchman’s reign at Old Trafford is in doubt after a poor run of form, but he could take ease off the situation if his side beat Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup tonight.

United sit in fifth position in the Premier League table, six points being local rivals Manchester City, who are in fourth place and are on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward does not want to sack Van Gaal until their Champions League fate is confirmed. Otherwise, the Red Devils will have to pay transfer money as compensation to Van Gaal, according to The Sun.

It has also emerged that former United boss David Moyes had a clause in his deal which enabled the club to sack the now Real Sociedad manager with a small pay-off if he failed to get in a qualification place for Europe’s biggest competition.

And Moyes was sacked as soon as a fourth place finish was mathematically impossible in 2014, meaning United didn’t have to pay out a bigger fee.

Bedy Moratti, sister of former Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti, stated that jobless Jose Mourinho will succeed Van Gaal as the manager of United when the season finishes in summer.

“He’s missed as a person, but right now he’s happy, he’s going to Manchester.” said Moratti on Saturday.
